Plagued Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

adults nowadays have been swept up in what is essentially (if not literally) toy collecting.
My working theory its a giant cope for how weak some people are. They can't adapt and thrive because they get offended when drumpf publishes a Tweet or something so they regress, turn to their childhood toys, and consoom for comfort. Also mainstream toy companies make collecting plastic garbage quasi- accomplishments; ohhh look I got the exclusive special edition at (insert generic retail store here)!!

What was the first fandom that normalized modern geek culture consumerism worship? I know Trekkies have been a thing for years, but being a Trekkie was considered a joke. No way mainstream. Comic cons used to be for current comic fans. Professional hot girl cosplayer wasn't a thing until the early 2000s as a full time job. Was it the brony fandom? It feels like it normalized adults watching children's cartoons and organizing online. Bronies were like furries without baggage at the time. Not to mention Bronies had a political feminist element of defying gender roles shit.
I want to say Hot Topic, which was mocked for trying to profit off of counterculture.

Also that post confuses me.
1) We don't really know the purpose of the Venus of Willendorf and related figures. Maybe it was caveman porn, maybe it was a self-portrait by a cavewoman, maybe it was a fertility goddess; it's a mystery. 3) While I don't know the definitive history of this piece, the most common interpretation is Picasso was associating prostitutes with pain. In fact, one of his friends hated it because he considered it menacing and unfeminine so I have no idea why the poster thinks this is fetishism.

I do think consumerism might be a defense mechanism related to nostalgia and you don't even need to involve Trump with how shitty the world's becoming.

I miss when my NES and Saturn library was embarrassing because it was lame to like old games. Now it's embarrassing for different reasons.

The worst thing for nerd culture was letting the theater kids in. Everyone blames the jocks who wear star wars hoodies but it's the theater kids who have collapsed everything I like. Check out any of the new Star Trek shows. They're so melodramatic. Give me back my boring space politics show you crackers!

Theater kids made collecting games gay. They post that shit online, brag about it. I just do it because it's fun, that and the possibilityof archiving it someday. They do it for clout "look at me, I got a NES copy of Mario 3!". Fucking faggots.

how fucking common is this "theater kid" phenomena
its not really a concept round here, but i swear they must all be congregating online now, what with every tiktok video and short online video being
>POV you do something totally mundane [dances a jig] [points at self] [does a stupid expression]

They’re like nerds but performative, dramatic, and seek outside attention/validation for everything they do. It’s basically as you described, but IRL and usually the normal people think they’re loud weirdos and the insular nerds resent them for presenting the latter’s Special Interests to the general public in the most cringeworthy manner possible.

This is the first time I have seen the theatre-type kids getting blamed for "ruining" "nerd culture" and I actually don't think it is the most retarded thing I have heard. It makes me think of the really loud obnoxious SuperWhoLock women and the guys obsessed with Firefly and Naruto and Zelda and now I think the suggestion has some feet because I remember nerd merchandise becoming a lot easier to find and more mainstream around those guys' prime, though that may also be due to the internet rapidly becoming more mainstream and accessible (fucking RIP).

I think why theater kids specifically are getting the blame is because, while there were always TMI autistic nerds trying to drag normies into listening to their rants about their Special Interests, the norm used to be that nerds knew they were nerds, and kept their nerd shit under the table because they knew it was niche.

Where theater kids come in is when you have nerds, then give them the idea that they should take up performative acting. Now, in their mind every social interaction has become a rehearsal to hone their acting skills, and they’re still nerds, so they now not only seek out people to interact with, but talk to them about nerd shit because that’s the main thing they know about. Give these people money to do this, and enough of a platform, and you get what you have today.

Huawei's newest phone, in addition to China's recently implemented ban on having iPhones in government areas, has led to a strange wave of consoomerism for Huawei phones. Some people have gone as far as to bowing at Huawei stores, for the product itself, and for nationalistic pride, despite the phone's stats being equivalent to a few year's older iPhone:

That just smells like a government propaganda thing. However after watching the video, I find it interesting that governments now seem to be using consoomer behavior in their control and power methods. We're in for a wild ride in the future folks when it comes to China.

It's scary being at the point with governments mandating what to buy and trying to influence what we eat. China is just ground zero, forcing them to get the commie phones.

Basically this. Theater kids take your hobby, shout it from the roof, and then people make fun of it as it becomes normie. You just liked old games. They wanted to spread it without caring about the damage it'd do.

Strange I'd always assumed the current state of retro gaming was due to the people who grew up with then being at the age where they have alot of disposable income and bad faith actors like resellers and scalpers deliberately hyping the games up. Maybe it's just the sites I use but I haven't seen these type of kids pretending to like the hobby yet.

I'd love to see some of these types of videos of kids braging about owning old nintendo games, I've seen it with graded game "investors" where the they bragged about owning rare games and how great they are despite never playing them.

Where do you think they start? They were those kids. The youtubers alone have destroyed retro gaming. They hype it up, prices go up, then people horde those old games despite there being millions, enough to go around for the remaining consoles

Dude that was just life growing up man. You go into a used game shop anymore, and the fun games are behind glass and cost more than they did at retail. Unboxed. It starts at word of mouth, until youtubers drive up artificial hype for a fucking copy of Pokemon Red, despite there being millions of those in existence.

There was also that one episode of Storage Wars where the guy said a regular ole nintendo console went for thousands. Or was it millions I forget. That got the normie scalpers in on the retro game "I know what I have" trend.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95eUhuR8_ps They got $10 for it, thinking it was worth five figures.

Yeah it got them thinking that maybe their game/console/whatever was the ONE. The number of Duck Hunts and Super Mario Bros I've seen elderly normies trying to sell for $50+ is amazing.
This is what I'm talking about. One guy will make a common game "super rare" just by saying it is, and now Duck Hunt is full priced AGAIN. All because young kids will see that, and now want a copy as they hit their game stores trying to scoop a copy for a console they probably they don't even own (barring a Retron that let's you play those old games). I'd say Nintendo is the worst offender. Even just getting old controllers is hard, because if you want OEM ones, prepare to pay for that autism for your old console.
