Nexpo/YT Horror Channels - Do they all suck

Maaaaan...

I just finished watching Nexpo's video from 3 weeks ago on that fake PS1 game "Petscop", and that is some hardcore garbage right there. This is like the most Redditish Shit I have come across in years. I'm almost in awe of how disjointed and downright stupid that fucking story was. They even made it so much worse by basing the entire first half of this "game" on a real life tragedy which was an honest to goodness disturbing ordeal that really happened to a poor kid...if this had been some legit children's PS1 game with references to that event placed within it seemingly for no reason I'd love it for its creep factor alone even if I still hated the art direction.

But no. It was just another dumb, fake, """"analog 🤢horror 🤮game""" story. Total waste of several hours. Nexpo's video was abridged, narrated, and summarized and even THAT was THREE HOURS and still completely fell to pieces just halfway through. I think all the videos of the actual "gameplay" on the main channel total close to 10 hours! I mean maybe it was more interesting as the first few videos were being released back in 2017 and nobody knew how jank it was yet?

P.S...Is it just me or are you guys getting real annoyed with this "ps1 graphic is spukey" crap? Everywhere I look in the creepy tubes there's some dweeb talking about "analog horror" and "liminal spaces". If I never have to hear either those fucking terms again that would be just dandy.

I have disdain for middling junk that people latch onto en-masse like this it happens way too often and takes those concepts from "just okay" to "awful" in a heartbeat with oversaturation. I am not really a fan of ARGs since they exploded in popularity either but man! What a shitshow!

Worst part about Petscop for me is how fucking incomplete it ended, all because the creator was a retard who didn't plan anything out and made it up as he went along. He didn't like how the Newmaker case got a shitton of attention, so he changed the direction of the story to be about how the main character is actually an ftm pooner and this is xir's backstory of all the evil abuse that happened.

The PS1 aesthetic can work, but people tend to think that the ps1 spooky monster is what makes it work. What makes it work is how almost good the graphics are.
The graphics are good enough that everything resembles what it should be, to where you can analyze it. Oh, that's a wheelchair, oh that's some medical tools.
The PS1 aesthetic is best when doing claustrophobic spooky spaces. You see the textures warp and technical failings of the engine and it makes for a surreal experience.
Most people take PS1 graphics and make le spooky monster and have no respect for the nuance and art that goes behind it.

I mean, look at silent hill and resident evil.

the creator was a retard who didn't plan anything out and made it up as he went along

This seems to be the NUMBER ONE ISSUE with ARGs/Modern Creepypasta Episodics! You notice it so easy too...it's just everywhere! So annoying when people write horror like that.

I will give him credit because he clearly put a lot of effort into making the actual "game" itself. I know jack shit about coding and developing so I can't talk trash on him for that even if I didn't care for the art style of the game. But it is obvious he worked hard on it. I just wish it had worked.

The PS1 aesthetic can work,

Don't get me wrong; I love those graphics and completely agree that they can fit into the horror genre perfectly. I even like some of those unsettling dreamscapes you see with that "liminal" shit. Love it as a concept. Beautiful stuff at times, as well. Really pretty.

It's just the oversaturation that bugs me and the fact that most these fools don't know what to do with it once they get their hands on it and start Creating atop the canvasses of these two very unforgiving iconographies. Most "liminal"/"analog" stuff turns out battered by them - the creativity of the artist is battered by the medium itself. The potential is there but it's like a supercharged Mustang that these fools keep crawling into and then immediately drifting directly into a crowd.

I have yet to see an ARG or anything of that sort that has had even a descent ending. Most I've seen just end with a demon did it or something. The idea or a horror story that you uncover yourself through videos, websites, or posts online is very interesting but they've all been done so poorly. I think bad endings don't help but also when the creator buckles to people complaining. Petscop using a real case in it's story was tasteless but I think that the creator backtracking the way he did to write it out made it even worse. Like just go with what you originally wanted. I've gotten more satisfaction from shot on video horror movies then I've gotten from any ARG.

And watching hour long videos talking about said ARGs are just as if not more boring. If this is what people buy as horror it's no wonder that modern horror movies are now the cinematic equivalent of the old man for Courage the Cowardly dog putting on a spooky mask and going BOO suddenly.

I liked 'scop, but even I admit the big boon for "le sp00ky PS1 haunted analog VHS gamerinos" have gotten oversaturated, stale, and tired. I said before that I think Puppetcombo was the one to start this awful trend of "if I make a horror game with low poly models and textures that feel like the world is turning itself inside out, then that means I'm making great horror media, or something!" type shit, but I think Petscop might've been patient 0 that was the one to plant the seeds into zoomers minds that "le old retro look = zoomers shitting their pants," not helped that other "ARGs" like that Mario 64 beta channel got wrapped up into discord tranny drama shitshow that ended up having it canned in the end with no resolution. At least Petscop had an ending, good lord, ARGs are so fucking gay and NO ONE has made a good horror themed one since... Marble Hornets maybe?

Absolutely. He needed to stick with it as it was the only thing making that intriguing.

Doing Petscop right in the long term is so easy it's beyond frustrating that he didn't do it:

The story is you find the strange game. Okay, do your channel, but leave out the "friend" narration nonsense and all the other convolution. kid doing the narration could have exposited just a tiny bit less and made it look more like he was actually playing an unfamiliar game, but for the first two videos he did alright. Toss out from the script that stupid "handwritten note" you "find" in the cd case that has the secret code to arrive in spookyville written on it. That's far too convenient and reeks of inauthenticity. Program your game to allow you to accidentally slip into the disturbia a little more naturally.

First video, Second video. Then as soon as you get to the point after he read "They Wander the Newmaker Plane" reference for the first time and all the names have been introduced, episode 2 ends. cut all of the really on-the-nose strange shit out right there. Say you can't figure out how to proceed any further into the darkness. Let the audience google all those names and put the pieces together connecting this to the deaths like they did in the beginning of the ARG...but then actually program the entire rest of the kids game where you collect the pets and do kids game stuff. Make it a proper game, with maybe just a few more little uncanny nuggets tossed very quietly into the background. Finish that game and then just shrug your shoulders.

He could have tug the audience along forever with this strategy. Instead, it was over within a year and a half. He could return over the years with small morsels of "progress" after having proper amounts of time to write good material. People might still be going "what if?" to this day. There would always be that sliver of doubt that it wasn't some purpose-built ARG and instead people would speculate: was it possibly a one-off or small batch indie game? or surely at the very least a Net Yaroze title programmed by a real live psychopath. Something. There could be any number of disturbing reasons for the pet collection game to contain such awful things. Keep those gears turning, yknow.

It's one of those ones that always get me. Why not have the person just try a bunch of cheats or hammer a bunch of button press and get it to do something weird. Could even be a thread in the tale as the person works to figure out what they did to get it to work that way. Now, that borders on "le spoopy glitch had me heckin' scared" but it would be at least more interesting at first. Could even have something later in the game hint that it wasn't a glitch and its repeatable.

Im not even sure trans allegory even works well at all. There are too many characters without defined ideas or stories behind them. It is a whole thing of very flat characters working on a very pretty but ultimately empty backdrop. It was frustrating watching it because i wasnt watching because of investment or entertainment or wondering what would happen next. I was watching cause of sunk costs.

so he changed the direction of the story to be about how the main character is actually an ftm pooner and this is xir's backstory of all the evil abuse that happened.
...Say sike right now. Last I heard about the series is was about some jag off who decided to create a game dedicated to exposing a murder or something for some reason. How the fuck did it get to ftm shit!?

It mainly stems from this abstract concept of "rebirthing" one person into another by putting them into a machine and playing a song to complete the ritual, I guess, complete with turning said child into an Easter "Egg." Kinda funny when you realize Paul/Care/Lina(?) might've played the song wrong and that's how they ended up with a penis, by "accidentally" playing it wrong like "Aw geez guess I have a dick now, whoops."

Jumping off that, I think it's hard to get something good out of a blank-slate aesthetic that isn't built along with the story, especially when everyone just kind of goes along with the stupid shit other people do with it. Aesthetics should compliment and support the story and themes. SCP's aesthetic is of a government agency trying to understand supernatural shit beyond known science. It became a bunch of gay OC character sheets. The backroom's aesthetic is of empty, vaguely familiar places. It became "hur dur the monsters on level 42069 which is an endless version of my bedroom will rape you if you don't drink your almond milk."

My favorite of the Liminal Spaces are the ones that show up every so often and make me feel sad, like they should be populated with tons of happy kids playing loudly but never were. empty Arcades, empty kids jungle gym and ball pit areas at strange looking fast food places etc. Mcdonalds playplaces deserted and spotless. Those are where they really shine. Forlorn looking roads with dusky pink and teal skies next to endless cornfields which contain barns that look like the picture inside the machine at the eye doctor that blasts air into your eye. That stuff

It's based on a real case called Candace Newmaker its horrible torture they did to a child in name of psychology that killed her.

"The rebirthing was videotaped so that Candace’s mother could watch from another room, experiencing the miracle of her child’s rebirth without getting in the way. In the end, the video would prove to be anything but miraculous and would become a key piece of evidence in convicting Connell Watkins and her assistants."

Timelined excerpts from the videotape of Candace Newmaker's April 18 rebirthing session at the home of Connell Watkins in Evergreen. (Unless otherwise indicated, the comments are from Candace Newmaker.)
00:00 -- Therapist Julie Ponder tells Candace to lie down on the navy blue flannel sheet and get into the fetal position.

Ponder: So imagine yourself as a teeny little baby inside your mother's womb and what it felt like. Warm. It felt tight because her stomach was all around you. (Candace is bound in the sheet, the ends twisted above her head and held by Ponder. She is covered by pillows and four adults begin pressing on her.)

01:25 -- Ponder: What do you think you thought about when you where in there?

I thought I was gonna die.

Ponder: You thought you were gonna die in there?

Yeah.

Jeane Newmaker: I'm so excited. I'm going to have a brand new baby. I hope it's a girl. I'm going to love her, to hold her and tell her stories. . .I'm going to keep her very safe. . . Every day we'll be together and she'll be with me forever.

(Candace is asked if she believes what her mother is saying.)

Uh huh.

(Candace is asked how that makes her feel.)

Happy.

Watkins: If the baby doesn't decide to be born, she will die. When the baby decides to be born it's a wonderful thing.

Ponder: So little baby, are you ready to be reborn?

Uh huh.

Ponder: Come out head first. You have to push really hard with your feet. If you stay in there you're going to die and your mommy's going to die.

08:42 -- Who's sitting on me? I can't do it.

08:53 -- I can't do it! (Crying). My hands come out first?

Watkins: Sometimes it takes 18 hours to be born.

09:36 -- (Screaming) I can't do it. I can't do it! I can't breathe. I can't breathe!

10:16 -- Whoever is pushing on my head it's not helping. I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't breathe. It's too dark under here. Please quit pushing on my head I can't do it. Somebody's sitting on top of me.

10:50 -- (Moaning) Somebody's on top of me. Where am I supposed to come out? Right here? Where my finger is?

11:26 -- I can't do it. (Screams) I'm gonna die.

Ponder: Do you want to be reborn or do you want to stay in there and die?

11:40 -- Quit pushing on me. Please. (Moaning) Quit squishing my legs. I'm gonna die now. (Screams)

Ponder: Do you want to die?

No, but I'm about to.

12:10 -- Please, please I can't breathe.

12:30 -- I can't do it anymore.

12:40 -- Please quit pushing on me.

13:12 -- I need some help. Help! Help me please.

Watkins: Are you feeling the contractions, mom?

Newmaker: I am.

13:43 -- Where am I to go? Right here? Right here? I'm supposed to go right here? Please. Please. (Screams) OK I'm dying. OK, I'm dying. I'm sorry.

14:31 -- OK, I'm dying.

14:38 -- I'm going to die.

15:30 -- I want to die.

16:08 -- Can you let me have some oxygen? You mean, like you want me to die for real?

Ponder: Uh huh.

Die right now and go to heaven?

Ponder: Go ahead and die right now. For real. For real.

OK, I'm dead.

Watkins: It's not always easy to live. You have to be really strong to live a life, a human life.

17:07 -- (Labored breathing) Get off. I'm sick. Get off. Where am I supposed to come out? Where? But how can I get there?

Watkins: Just go ahead and die. It's easier . . .It takes a lot of courage to be born.

18:26 -- You said you would give me oxygen.

Watkins: You gotta fight for it.

19:50 -- (Candace vomits) OK, I'm throwing up. I just threw up. (Vomiting) I gotta poop. I gotta poop.

21:24 -- Uh, I'm going in my pants.

Ponder: Go ahead.

Watkins: Stay in there with the poop and vomit.

23:22 -- Help! I can't breathe. I can't breathe. It's hot. I can't breathe.

Newmaker: I'm so excited to have this baby. . I'm waiting for you, to love you and hold you. . .

Ponder: Scream, Candace.

No.

Newmaker: Baby, I love you already. I'll hold you and love you and keep you safe forever. . . Don't give up on your life before you have it. . .

32:25 -- 33:44 -- Jack McDaniel repositions himself on a pillow over Candace's head.

Ponder: Candace? (No response) (Takes another pillow from Newmaker.) She needs more pressure over here so she can't. . .so she really needs to fight.

Watkins: Getting pretty tight in here.

Ponder: Yep. . .less and less air all the time.

35:39-40:00 -- Ponder and McDaniel reposition themselves again.

Ponder: She gets to be stuck in her own puke and poop.

Watkins: Uh huh. It's her own life. Quitter.

40:01: No. (This is Candace's last word.)

McDaniel: Mama got you this far, now it's up to you.

Watkins: Candace is used to making her life everybody else's problem. She's not used to living her own life.

Ponder: Quitter, quitter, quitter, quitter, quit, quit, quit, quit. She's a quitter.

(Watkins leaves, Newmaker leaves. McDaniel takes Watkins' place. Watkins returns.)

McDaniel: This baby doesn't want to live. She's a quitter.

(Watkins tells McDaniel and St. Clair to take a break.)

(Ponder and Watkins discuss someone who is stressed, then chitchat about their dream homes and a million-dollar property nearby that is being remodeled.)

Watkins: Let's talk to the twerp.

(They unwrap Candace.)

01:09:53 – Watkins: Oh, there she is sleeping in her vomit.

She was not asleep she was dead. She was suffocated over 70 MINUTES of this.

"Connell Watkins and her assistant were charged with reckless child abuse resulting in death, and sentenced to 16 years in prison. The other two people who had held the pillows in the video were given 10 years probation for criminally negligent child abuse and sentenced to serve 1,000 hours of community service as part of a plea bargain."

My favorite of the Liminal Spaces are the ones that come around every so often and make me feel sad, like they should be populated with tons of happy kids playing loudly but never were. If you like liminal spaces, check out silent hill shattered memories. It's a reimagining of silent hill 1 and you actually get to sit back and just enjoy the games atmosphere for large chunks. There's the Alice in wonderland burger shop that always stuck with me, an abandoned mall, and an entire school. It's just so surreal. Someone even ported the mall to VR chat and it's a sad type of cozy.

It should be mentioned that while yeah if the guy who made Petscop wanted to continue on with using the Candace case as a central theme, then he would also had to have been okay with dumbass kids contacting people involved with the case and whatever else because in their minds, these kids think that this series is an ARG that must have some problem that needs to be solved or found in order for the series to continue.
I think having the Note in the first episode and mentioning a website was his biggest mistake in leading people to believe that there is something outside of this game that could bring more clues about this. (not helped that he also included an incomplete phone number in one of the episodes for potential viewers to call, trying to see if it'll lead to anything). It got so bad that I think people ended up finding a website that had a LOT of ties and themes to Petscop but surprisingly enough was 100% purely coincidental. Got so bad in fact he had to change the channel description at one point telling people to stop looking and just wait until Christmas for the new episode to drop, lol.

I genuinely enjoyed Power Drill Massacre. It was all wrapped up nice and neat, an overall really cool little experience.
Puppet Combo hits the nail on the head for capturing the "shitty 80s horror exploitation b-movie on the back shelf of the video store" vibe in their games. Nothing's taken too seriously, it's like cheap schlocky junkfood, and I mean, cmon. You should know exactly what you're getting into with titles like "Power Drill Massacre" or "Babysitter Bloodbath" lmfao

Hell yeah. I never played Babysitter Bloodbath though I am aware of it back when it was Halloween. I did see a playthru though. Those games are so neat. I loved the outdoor atmosphere of Power Drill Massacre with the gorgeous sunset cliffs and spooki abandoned mine. Going inside was like a shock the first time from how radically dark and horrible it was inside. They nailed the claustrophobia, something I very rarely feel in a videogame. They did a great job on those two.
