Its mostly poor and generally the lower class people, bums, alcoholics/junkies/the refuse of society that use it in large swaths of America. America is a car culture, and for good reason, since many of our states alone dwarf most European countries, and it wouldnt be viable to run transit for large areas of sparse population. Having a car is basically the default here, if you are fortunate enough to not be from a large city, and so long as certain interests keep failing to change that. Getting your licence and first car is a right of passage in most parts of America.It's always seemed curious to me the horror show that public transport is over there in the US, while it's perfectly fine in most other places.
Its different in college towns and bughive cities, by which I mean more economically and socially diverse riding public transit, not that its any better of an experience.
