I blame this on the basis that perhaps most of the Jews who founded Israel came from Europe and were used to their gun laws. In any setup where you are constantly colonizing/"settling" anything like the setup the USA on guns would be far more preferable since you'd have to fight off potential attackers from time to time.

I think countries like Saudi Arabia see more money in getting along with Israel and view the Palestinians as irrelevant. Iran and Saudi Arabia are borderline at war already. The Iranians already attacked Saudi oil fields and they are fighting an active proxy war in Yemen. Iran is not in a great spot overall with also a lot of internal discontent. So this might just be their way to project "strength"

I wouldn't be surprised if the guys manning the system were fucking off or didn't even know how to fully operate it. The fact that so many IDF soliders are being slaughtered leads me to believe they weren't training for this kind of surprise attack or expected one to ever happen.

Extremely true, conscript armies, especially when they're doing safe and boring tasks, are quite lazy and unmotivated.

They are also used to Mossad being on top of this kind of stuff. Normally this plan would have been aborted by a bunch of Hamas commanders getting drone striked or committing suicide by 10 bullets to the back of the head. The fact that this happened with apparently no warning is an incredible intelligence failure.
