It's a weird situation for sure but I wouldn't ever call their relations abysmal, more like extremely guarded. The Soviet Union did push for the partition of Palestine and recognized Israel shortly after independence, but then ended diplomatic relations because of the Six-Day War when hopes of Israel being a socialist state aligned with the USSR faded. Their investment in Arab countries and support for the UAR didn't help matters one bit either.Israel and Russia have had abysmal relations for decades. The Red Army was exceptionally disinterested in the fate of Jewish camp inmates, and the best the survivors could hope for was benign neglect. The Cold War period in particular saw the Bolsheviks doing everything they can to warm up to Israel's enemies and supply them with weapons and training. T
They have been much closer in the past couple of decades, at least before Putin started favoring Iran and investing a lot into that relationship.
