It's a weird situation for sure but I wouldn't ever call their relations abysmal, more like extremely guarded. The Soviet Union did push for the partition of Palestine and recognized Israel shortly after independence, but then ended diplomatic relations because of the Six-Day War when hopes of Israel being a socialist state aligned with the USSR faded. Their investment in Arab countries and support for the UAR didn't help matters one bit either.

They have been much closer in the past couple of decades, at least before Putin started favoring Iran and investing a lot into that relationship.

I never really understood that. Israeli's have a long standing history of not liking being ruled and treated poorly. Just look at what happens and you let them in your "walled cities". They'll open the gates and let your enemies in. It's worse than dealing with Sikhs. At least with them it takes a while for them to finally get upset enough to kill you, those you hold dear, and lay waste to your royalty.
