I think its less the mask has slipped and more that the wider public perception of the brutality of war has been reawoken by Ukraine. Normies are being forced to slowly realize that war isn't this quiet surgical affair in which the good guys win and the bad guys lose, but a bloody hellscape in which everyones dying, no matter whether its just or not.

Pretty sure we're looking at the end of the end of history - The experiment of the last 40 years in globalism, tying everyone economically together so all but the smallest of actors couldn't afford to fight is starting to come undone, and the great power backing it with their naval strength to secure trade in the US Navy is starting to back out. 2016 was a major turning point for /pol/ just in general, as it really started going down the shitter after that year. I'm sure there's more than a few oldfags that'd swear it's been shit since 2012, but that was when I first personally noticed a major decline in the quality of the posts, and the definite presence of third party actors looking to stir shit beyond the usual odd failtroll or personal army request.
