Most of the people that burnt out with the series in BW wasn't just because the starters but the fact that Unova just had a fucton of bootleg Gen 1 pokemon. They weren't awful but it was more that it just felt like trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice and with people that grew up with the series, it was just the "nothing is new and shiny enough anymore" to draw those people back. The number of new pokemon was actually good. It's just that a lot felt uninspired like a new Parasect or Machamp. They're not all 1:1 but it just felt like it was retreading ground and that's pretty much all the complaints I really remember. Number: good. Rehashing: meh.

I'm shocked how inferior that game is to Platinum, which was released about 15 years ago. Every remake tried to do something different or to fix underlying issues with the originals, even ORAS that people seem to hate. BDSP has nothing, it's a poor man's port of the original DP with a few bells and whistles and just as many misses and removed features. Not even going to comment on the lack of Battle Frontier or whatever, that's just a pipe dream by now.
Oh and for whatever reason, these remakes are so poorly thought out that they are actually much buggier than the original games. I've seen videos of people breaking the game without even trying, last time I saw that was in the Gen 1 games(this is not a complement btw)
Gen 5 remakes are going to be a disaster at this rate. I noticed that both Platinum and HGSS have jumped up in price last I checked, glad I am holding on to these games so I don't have to make due with the inferior remakes in the future. Less spoken of how fans can fix these games better than GF can via mods and romhacks the better, too(for free btw)

All pokemon based on food look off, it's a concept that doesn't work imo.

The food based ones only work when it's something natural just animated or something normal disguised as food like pastry dog. Combee was a honeycomb is fine because it just combines a bee with its hive. The "haunted pantry items" are all around mid to me because they just feel a bit lame. Sushimon is just from an entirely different franchise. The cake sucks. The ice cream sucks. Whipped cream sucks. All of the "it's just a fruit or fruit tree" ones vary to decent to just okay but none are that awful. Jack-o-latern is endearing in a way. All mushroom but Breloom suck.

He looks like he was made for some N64 Zelda and it's not an insult but there's something about him that falls too much into the weird territory of design.

I mean, as long as GF don’t outsource the remakes like they did with DP we should be fine. Quality will at least be GF standard buggy mess and not what BDSP was.

Thing is that BDSP is still better than SV and SwSh simply because the source material it's based on is. GF is unredeemable in it's current state, and I don't expect anything out of them, but an outsourced studio might have a chance to create something decent. Genius Sonority and Third Versions(which had different directiors) have shown much higher quality than what the "A studio" usually produces, so the bar isn't too high.
Oh, and since we're talking about the remake, I noticed a few small pieces of censorship and shoehorned black NPCs scattered around. By itself, this is not a big issue, but it should be noted that the previous remakes did not have this issue. This goes to show that there might be TPCi meddling that is behind at least some of the core issues that every single modern Pokemon game has, and that means that a simple developer change won't solve anything. It also means that Gen 5 will likely be ruined beyond belief as well, since tokenism and a race mixed couple were there at launch. I can only imagine current year horrors that they might try to virtue signal there.

Going to say that a lot of the smaller issues are caused by that. The amount of bs that’s in the localised is silly. And since we now have world wide launches you don’t get the window of time the older games have to iron out the larger issues for world wide releases, until the DLC And the smaller issues are basically in the game from the start just to make things easier.

Switching to same time/day release for everywhere was honestly bad.

DLC for S/V brings a lot of fixed but it’s sectioned off into areas so those qol aren’t everywhere. Which was the benefit of havibg 3rd games. Everywhere had to have them

Think a reason a lot of the older games were better is the devs seemed to think or be approaching it from ‘this is the last game, needs to hit’ and some of the issues the newer games have had is the old staff that made the classics and are clearly tapped and trying to hand it over to new talent but the talent just is not there yet. So you get things like SwSh and S/V.

You saw what happened when they made a game they actually cared about. You got Arceus, which was not being torn to shreds by the Community every 5 seconds.

It's disappointing to see GF give so little of a fuck about Spain that they immediately went back to a Japanese related region not just within the same gen, but within the same GAME. Embarrassing, makes Galar look downright soulful.

Whenever I see this kind of take I usually chalk it up to people not knowing how TPCi structures its sanctioned events, they actually have age divisions in their events so scenarios where you'd see a 10-year old kid getting the absolute shit beaten out of them by a someone 2-3 times their age is usually impossible. And I say usually because I've only seen play between divisions in more causal settings like prereleases.

You're close but you're slightly off, IIRC the issues are due to Game Freak poorly managing its veteran and greenhorn teams. Remember when GF said that it was prioritizing its Gear Project initiative (which gave us tiltes like Harmoknight, Tembo the Badass Elephant, Pocket Card Jockey, and Giga Wrecker) over Pokémon? Well, if the rumors I've heard are true then the "Team 1" working on original IPs mostly consists of veteran developers whilst "Team 2" is mostly run by new recruits.

That glitch was corrected in the 2.0.2 patch released a couple of days ago.

Also, in the spirit of keeping the thread from becoming a sperg slapfight – I've begun playing through this weird FireRed ROM hack.



It's kind of like Radical Red in that it adds the entire National Dex up to Gen 7 (plus the Gen 8 starters) into Kanto, and makes the AI somewhat harder to beat. But it has some of its own... quirks.

I'm not sure why, but the author has apparently decided to change the story by cramming Team Magma & Aqua into Kanto. I don't know much else because I only explored up to a bit of Route 2 before taking a break.

Considering the absolute state of the franchise, it can be assumed that any time you're talking to a western gamefreak fan, there is usually trannies present, yes. Trying to appeal to them in the effort to make the franchise more popular in the West has been a horrid decision, now even the characters look awful and that was one of the last few good things the franchise had going for it.
But to be fair, there is only a few creatures out there pathetic enough to still defend Gamefreak in 2023, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the bulk of them are trannies(or their sympathizers). It cannot be emphasized enough how horrible their fanbase is, one of the worst in gaming, hands down.

Competitive isn't limited to just official tournaments though. Many unofficial ones are local and don't have age divisions plus the official ones are gatekept so that it's not feasible for most kids to have a chance to enter them anyway if they are good enough. Even if you win no one cares about who is good at a video game and you wouldn't even get enough to cover the cost of travel. People take it way too seriously, invest way too much time, and act like their way is the only way to do things any deviations or shortcuts are wrong or cheating. Almost like the point is to brag about how much time and money you wasted.
