I think part of it was Chris, being a nieve child because autism, etc., thought everything would work out in the end despite the obvious signs.

I think the autism card backfired on Chris in this case, since we can assume Barb wasn't cooperative regardless if it actually happened or not (which it likely did since Chris outright was saying he wanted his mother to drop dead so he could get 14BC sooner than he changed his tune about the motherfucking). There also the part about him breaking the law in violating the protective order, so it kind of spiraled from that with him getting ultimately committed to a mental ward.
