"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

I don't consider these reviews, I consider these videos more of a quick comedy skit
Absolutely, he's way too much of a casual for me to ever consider his videos real reviews, not to mention the length of the videos make it impossible to give an in-depth look into any game. It's entertaining rants from simpler internet times to me.
Like I said I tend to prefer Spectacle Brawler
Yeah, but don't you need to explain every time you use that term what kind of game you are talking about because you're pretty much the only one using it? If i didn't read your previous posts i'd need to make a big thunk to imagine what kind of game a "Spectacle Brawler" is, maybe that's just me though.

On a bit more off-topic note, i hate how MattMcMuscles calls Fighting games "Button Bashers" and not "Button Mashers", the insipid cunt.

You're absolutely right, and this is another reason genre labels are retarded in practice--they depend entirely on people knowing WTF you're talking about.

"Souls-like" makes no sense to people who aren't familiar with the Dark Souls games, just for example.

If I'm ever talking to a normie or otherwise not-a-hardcore-gamer, I try to just describe the game instead of using genre terms.

What? Character Action Game is the established term and describes what kind of game it is sufficiently enough. I admit Spectacle Fighter sounds kinda cool though.
In what world is "Character Action Game" a better description than "Spectacle fighter?"

Its literally 1 step removed from "Action Adventure" in describing fuckall.

For me, it's the established term and i know what kind of gameplay a game with that descriptor has. Probably just old /v/ autism, it's where i first saw the term gaining widespread usage.

"Spectacle fighters make testicles lighter" was pretty funny, ngl. "Character action games" is more difficult to make a funny rhyme out of.
"Character action games encourage us smackin' dames" is the best I could come up with.

A lot of things make no sense to people living in caves, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, or on North Sentinel Island. Honestly, how many gamers don't know what Dark Souls is at this point? Fortnite zoomers, maybe. But you shouldn't be trying to explain anything to them, anyways.

Let me try:

Character Action Games reignite the old flames
Character Action Games aren't fun if you're lame
Character Action Games make you have to study character action frames
Character Action Games go great with a load of champagne

I think the length is one of the best features of it, really, because I do not have the patience for some 4-hour long rant by a nasally autist that could be compressed into a blog post.

Oh yeah, this trend of hours-long "video essay" shit on YT is a blight. The format suits Yahtzee, i can't imagine listening to him drone on about something or other for an hour plus, which seems to be all the rage know. I wish i'd know where people take the time from to sit through these marathon videos, some of these i see in my recommendations have ridiculously high click numbers.

Edit: I am retarded, i already did listen to Yahtzee drone on for more than an hour on end not long ago when i was watching that Zero Punctuation yearly compilation.

His books have gotten progressively worse, and the saddest thing is, you can tell he is trying to do better.

He's fallen victim to the 'I want to make the dish not critique it' syndrome that affects so many reviewers. Maybe one day someone will get the hint and try the Gordon Ramsay approach of switching careers in the opposite direction. That seems like it might be more fulfilling and successful. You've already made your bones so theres nothing left to prove. Then you move on to judge others.

Yes, Mogworld slid in on a shrimp sandwich, it was perfect for him, but everything since has been so sweaty palmed for that very reason.

Yeah those are pretty good. The meter for "character action game" is a pain to work with. That's probably what pissed Yahtzee off too. He came up with that clever rhyme, then they named it something else that's really tricky to rhyme in a funny way.

Here's one for you; spectacle brawlers should make you feel taller.
P5 Strikers comes to mind when I think of "spectacle brawler." Fast-paced with lots of particle effects.

His "Let's Drown Out" videos were pretty terrible. His buddy kind of helped him, but I can't remember anything they ever said in the videos. The only one I ever remember watching is the Just Cause 2 video, because he was doing it without using the hookshot. Neither of them were very good at off-the-cuff material.

I think it was obvious his opinions were shit and he finished his games on easy mode for a long time now, assuming he even finished said games(doubtful, he admits to simply watching videos in some cases). I don't consider these reviews, I consider these videos more of a quick comedy skit, so personally what bothers me more is him being lazy with his jokes(nazis bad! drumpf bad! poopycock!!(he can't even say that anymore LOL)) or constantly hearing about that Nick guy more and more, which is likely directly connected to him getting tamer and more political as the time goes on. He was much more honest and crude, but also funnier in his earlier videos.
Oh, and him trying to shill his books or other series or his attempts at trying to be a game journo? Hilarious, he will have to cope with only being known for being that smug british cunt that swears at video games for 5 minutes a week, a more graceful AVGN that hasn't lost as much edge(but just as much hair)
you'd probably hate his podcast, Slightly Something Else. They (him and his co-host Marty) discuss a topic, or attempt to discuss a gaming topic for like 20 - 30 minutes and then read super chats for an hour, while begging for money, talking about Nick, and holding onto jokes for way too long.

The trick with those vids is that people have them as background noise more or less. There's a few YouTubers that I sub to specifically because they put me to sleep.

I was a libtard then, so I remember disagreeing with his more conservative takes. The West Coast made the tables turn.

For a long time in the 1990s, "Doom clone" was an acceptable term for what we call "FPS". But Dark Souls isn't nearly as genre-busting and a cultural phenomenon as Doom (1993) was.

Yeah, Darksouls became a skin suit that other games parade around in for a while. It was four years of "this is the Darksouls of Musou games" or whatever.

What conservative takes? He was always a liberal though until recently it was "2005 liberal" which is pretty moderate by today's standards.

I remember I liked to have those long videos on as background noise when I was building structures in Minecraft or Dragon Quest Builders, which as much as you enjoy the end product can be a lengthy and tedious activity especially if the structure is big.
