"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

I'm in camp "MK makes me squeamish now and I don't see the appeal anymore of the gore" (yes, call me a faggot), but at the same time, outside of deranged outliers like TLoU2, most games don't really go into absurd detail of the violence. Also, it's not like MK is immune to goofy shit even if the gore is the goriest it's ever been,. MK11 borught back Friendships and I'm convinced MK12 will have some goofy shit in there as well. Also, at least for MK, the violence IS the brand, they can't really stop it at this point without making a new franchise.

Engarde does look neat (already knew about it from Iron Pineapple in one of his steam dumpster diving videos), but the aesthetic just looks Fortnitesque to me, basically, sort of cartoony games with light atmosphere's are still everywhere. And then giving Blasphemous shit for all the Christian imagery and terminology is pretty cuntish as well, specially since it really didn't tell me shit about the game, yes, it's a Metroidvania, but is it a GOOD Metroidvania? I don't need mad innovation on my platformer explorers, just that I don't end up lost 3 hours looking for where to go and spend another 3 hours trapped in a pixel perfect platforming segment.

Why doesn't he get more shit for not finishing the games he reviews?
Did you just notice? He's always been the "plays game for 2 hours on easy then cobbles together a review from old bits" guy; hasn't really changed a bit since Demon's Souls and Monster Hunter aside from getting more Current Year/Anno Floydi in his bitching.

Honestly the most I've laughed at anything from them in a long time. Are these niggas for real with this shit!? The cringe is palpable.

Any more debasement and they might as well send Amy out to one corner to turn tricks and send KC out to the other corner to sell drugs. I know what you're thinking, "naw, man, they'd get Marty to suck the dicks, he's the best at it." Marty only does it for free. If he did it for money, it'd suck the enjoyment out of it.
Yahtzee unironically looks like an insane homeless serial killer. Does he think that hair looks good? Or, at least better than being bald? Jesus fuck. Terrifying.

I can respect a man for not balding graciously.

I don't really watch Yahtzee all that much. I only watch when I'm interested in a game he's reviewing. I don't dislike him, Zero Punctuation is just not my cup of tea. Hearing that he doesn't beat games does make sense when he has to do a review every week like it made sense that the reviewers at CGR Undertow only had to beat the first 3 chapters of a game in order to do a review on it considering they put videos almost every day. They also allegedly only got paid $20 per review.

Ask people what are the best indie titles and you'd get a list composed entirely of 5-10 year old games, rather than anything recent.
hollow knight, blasphemous, axiom verge 2, bug fables, rain world, curse of the moon 1/2, cruelty squad, noita. Top tier indies have been coming out far more often than AAA's.

I'm a pretty big game enthusiast or whatever a hobbiest is called so i realize these arent for everyone but the metroid-like boon has been incredibly popular lately, so has the deckbuilder rogue-lite genre with inscryption, darkest dungeon etc. so its not just me.

The ones that currently popular are either derivative of other indies/SNES/Souls with far lower quality, or just half baked ideas that don't survive the one hour mark.

Don't forget Deep Rock Galactic and Battlebit Remastered, the latter absolutely BTFOing anything Dice has offered recently.
Really even if you asked for the best AAA games, people would be listening 5-10 year old games too.
Depending on the demographic, they would be listing 10-20 year old games. I'm of the opinion that Cave Story (2004 indie), Resident Evil 4 (2005 AAA), Final Fantasy 12 (2006 AAA), Dark Souls (2011 "AAA", more like AA), Hotline Miami (2015 indie), Hollow Knight (2017 indie), Sekiro (2019 AAA), are among the best games of all time. There are infinite variables in a discussion like this, trying to boil it down to "indie vs AAA" is pretty pointless.

Having played Desperados 3 and watched Yahtzee's review of it, it makes me even more suspicious that he's a typical Games Journalist. Dumbfuck talked up how difficult the game is that it's basically just trial and error and the levels are like puzzles. It's not, you can shoot your way through lots of them. Levels 2 and 3 (out of 16) are like what he described and that makes me think he never played beyond them.

I didn't care whether or not he beat the games he reviewed, because he was funny. He's not funny anymore, and he moralfags about shit that he would've ragged on in the past. Like the trannies and the Harry Potter game.

Here, some videos from when he was funny:

Why doesn't he get more shit for not finishing the games he reviews? YMS got quite a bit of shit for reviewing movies he didn't finish watching so it's only fair that Yahtzee get criticism for not bothering to beat games he's reviewing. Just assuming it's bland so I don't need to bother playing the rest of it could massively backfire on him depending on the game like it did with CGR Undertow with Spec Ops: The Line.

It's the principle of "I don't need to outrun the lion, I just need to outrun you," because there are so many "professional" reviewers and YouTube personalities alike that fail to do any research and/or it's painfully obvious of how bad they are at it (Dean Takahashi trying to play Cuphead, e.g.).

By comparison, if you're competent enough to get through the first third of the game (or whatever) you can sound like you know what you're talking about and patch over the rest with stuff from YouTube.

Tried to watch the Sea of Stars review, but between his "fascism" and "climate" hysteria at the start and that he seemed to decide spoiling the whole fucking start was a great way to open things up I just closed it and passed. Anybody playing the game that wishes to share any impresions?

I looked into it, saw "Chrono Trigger" clone and noped out. With Western studios it's always the same "Quirky Indie RPG" that must add politics and have ass ugly character art. I won't be surprised if Yahtzee liked it because it's okay when indies do Japanese games but treat it ironically.

It is a relatively harmless and bland open world 2d pixel rpg. If you like those, you will probably find it fine

tl;dr: Yahtzee hasn't played Tony Hawk.

I mean, I haven't either but I have enough knowledge about it from cultural osmosis to know that manuals are pretty much key to the genre.

I know the subtitle of this thread is "The only thing worth watching on The Escapist", but a couple months ago they started a new short series called "The Stuff of Legends", which has a vaguely Morgan Freeman-ish guy tell stories about crazy video game events in the past. It's actually really good for short-form content, even if you heard these stories beforehand:

Also, 3rd video and a recent Escapist upload is focusing on EVE online -- it's like YouTubers heard of Fredrik Knudsen's DTRH descent into gay v-tubing and are capitalizing on this subject? Or maybe The Escapist was the content creator Fredrick "accidentally" plagiarized? But more importantly, why do YouTubers care so much about EVE online in 2023?
