After Israel said they were not going to invade Gaza, I was knew this was going to be a big nothingburger.

I was reading about the beginning of the Israeli Arab conflict last night and Arabs initiated the first violence trying to siege the Jewish settlements while rejecting the two state solution that the UN had proposed. Only in the ensuing conflict did they lose land and get displaced.

There are more stories to be told....The jews did some cruel things to the arabs too, but in the shadow of ww2 this is
to neglect. You need ultimate power to create your own state when it is surrounded by enemies.

This is after a significant number of European Jews began moving to Palestine and displacing the fellahin peasants, and then doubled down with the mandate that announced the land in which they lived was going to be turned into a Jewish homeland (which could have meant "a state in which Jews lived" or "a Jewish ethnostate", but the Zionists tended to lean into the latter). The demographics of the region went from 3% Jewish in the late 19th century to 32% Jewish by 1948, with promises of far more Jews to come... which wasn't helped by prominent Zionists basically deciding they wanted to deport all the Arabs out of the area -

The Zionist leadership in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, from David Ben-Gurion, Israel's founding prime minister, through Chaim Weizmann, the liberal president of the World Zionist Organisation, and Menahem Ussishkin and Zeev Jabotinsky, had supported the idea (of deporting the Arabs). In 1928, Frederick Kisch, the chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, told Weizmann that he had "always been hoping and waiting for" a solution of "the racial problem of Palestine" by way of a transfer of its Arabs to Mesopotamia. (although it's worth noting a lot of them publicly denied such thinking, especially Ze'ev Jabotinsky).

Indeed the two state solution came after Britain had tried to end the mandate by doing a one state solution in the white paper of 1939 - which argued that since 450,000 European Jews had settled there, the British would limit Jewish migration to 75,000 a year for 5 years (after which it'd be down to the consent of the Arab majority) with restrictions on land transfers to European Jewish settlers and then the creation of a constitution that enshrined the rights of both.

This got rejected by the Arabs but very rejected by the Jews, which spurred the creation of some violent paramilitary groups that attacked Arabs and the British, and at one point the Stern gang attempted to ally themselves with Hitler against the British and support German military expansionism in the Middle East, if he'd support unlimited Jewish migration to Israel to displace the Arabs.
