Adam Johnston / YourMovieSucks / YourMovieSucksDOTorg / AnUnkindness - It's hip to fuck dogs.

The most egregious example was in his Coco review where the song Remember Me was only there to tug at the audiences heartstrings, despite one of the movies main plot points is all about that song and who wrote it. A sentimental ballad from a father to his daughter? Can't have that! It might cause audiences to feel something.
This is catastrophically autistic, this is something a Sheldon Cooper-type character would say so the audience can laugh at how much of a fucking sperg he is

He even composes music if I'm not mistaken, and he hasn't so much as gone down a wikipedia rabbit hole on music theory.
It's because there's no colorful lion to make it easier to engage with, and keep his attention.

I've studied music theory, and to fully grasp some of it you have to read sheet music. So, he would need that skill, then he would need to be able to recognize chords, key signatures... And, again, no cartoons, usually just a piano diagram, and your own ears.

And then, explaining why some of these concepts work is almost entirely taste.

For example: why do we like a V-I cadence? Well, because (if we're in C major) the B to C motion is a half step, and we like hearing those resolve. The D to E is a stepwise motion, and the G is the same.

It's most akin to math, but it's math you have to listen to.

I feel like Adam should've really just stuck to his main channel and the highlights + clips channels. He branches out in an unnecessary manner because people want to watch him for his film criticisms, not to see him eat food or play video games. He'd probably make more money if he put his eggs in one basket.
I'm kind of surprised that his gaming channel lost money. The games, thumbnails, and over produced editing made it look pretty professional and exactly what an audience would want. I watched some of the videos and from what I saw they could be pretty funny. Oddly though, not really because of Adam, but more because of his edgy friends.

It's not just autistic, it's fucking stupid.

What are the main themes of Coco? Music and its effect on people, and remembering/honoring family and ancestors.

So he's going to claim that a song about remembering someone, in a movie about music and remembering people, is only there for cheap emotion? Jesus fucking Christ, that's smoothbrained.

He's allergic to any emotion besides coom.

Dude released a full album of original songs but people here think he doesn't know what a chord is.
Plenty musicians can and have recorded music without knowing music theory. You don't need to know what a Dsus4 chord is in order to walk up to a piano and hit the D-G-A keys. There's "knowing what a chord is" as in being aware that multiple notes simultaneously played "is a chord," and then there's "knowing what a chord is" as in picking out the chord tones and its inversions when a chord comes up in a piece of sheet music. Virtually everyone knows the former, but it's very plausible to be a recording musician who can't do the latter.

Michael Jackson didn't know music theory in that way either, but he obviously made a song or two in his day. The same goes for Dave Brubeck, Stevie Wonder, and the Beatles. None of them "know music theory" in that sense. It's wholly plausible Adam could fall in a similar camp (although his music is hardly of that caliber).

I was about to bring up Jackson as someone who couldn't even read music, yet I don't think anyone could claim he was a poor musician. All the dweebs in here gatekeeping music theory have the energy of that "Hi, musicologist here!" dingus on Twitter.

so what movies does he deem superior?
curious how they fare music-wise.

He also REALLY likes the O.G. OldBoy movie

And I want to be clear: I'm not trying to gatekeep music theory or anything with my stupid post. I'm just trying to clarify that it can be hard to engage in if you can't read it, or have some way to understand it. It can be hard to fall into the rabbit hole.

If he actually cared about music theory, he would probably be explaining why PAC cadences are plebian shit, but deceptive cadences are brilliant.

As I said earlier in the thread the gaming channel made perfect sense in 2013 when it launched. Because that was during the initial livestreaming boom of the early 2010s when games like Minecraft and Amnesia the Dark Descent first blew up.

However there's now so much competition in that space just making gaming content saying "It's that Youtube movie reviewer guy playing video games" isn't that interesting. Nowadays people actually want to see quality gameplay or a quality personality and there's hundreds of alternatives. The only people who watch his gaming content are just his orbiters.

All I know is that people who grew up in the 2000s freak the fuck out when they hear a G on the piano.
