Some of the daughters straightened her hair a few years back, and he didn't like it.

I think "demand" is a strong word. People want to please their partners, and if they're into 1980s glam rock corpse makeup or six packs, it is a small price to pay for a happy home life.

Facial hair or lack of facial hair would probably be a better example than six pack abs. Lots of guys keep a beard or keep clean shaven because it's what their wife likes, or what they THINK their wife likes.
Dave may or may not demand Jill look a certain way... but I think it's far more likely that she wore her hair and makeup a certain way when they were young, he told her she was pretty, and she's been clinging to the image she initially presented to him ever since. Lots of men wouldn't even notice if their wife changed their hair. He could very well not care at all, and think she does her makeup the way she likes it, while she's agonizing over it every morning because she thinks HE likes it that way, even though she hates it! Kind of romantic in a very stupid and sad gift of the Magi way.
Some men aren't even cognizant their wives wear makeup at all, they think they just look that way. Impossible with Jill, obviously, rabid raccoons don't even look like her without makeup. But those wives could still be doing it for their husband's benefit in the sense that they want to look nice for them, not necessarily because the husband actually asked or told.
Either way, one or both of these two have terrible taste. My money's on both.

Honestly? Yes. She may be a batshit narcissist but I don’t see why Jilldo wouldn’t be able to land a guy with, you know, a job. Or literally any skills whatsoever.
By her own account she pursued him first and not the other way around. For whatever bizarre reason Jill just loves that lardass.

What's apparent though is Dave would be literally nothing without Jill's drive. He was a beaner loser church hanger-on and she made him a tract tycoon, guest pastor and patriarch. Still a complete loser but at least now she can pretend he isn't.
