When you find out one of your 'friends' was only doing it so they could earn brownie points with their 'leader' is all quite sad.

It's reads a bit like stories about "informal collaborators" that worked for the Stasi. There were and still are a lot of people that apply for access to the files written and kept about them, only to find out that people they cinsidered close friends, and in some cases even family members, worked for 'them' for one reason or another and reported on the misdeeds and, if they knew them well enough, even the motives of the undesirable.
