There are aspects of Patrick that everyone empathizes with to some extent: worrying what others think of you, trying to fit in, masking your true emotions at work/in your social group for fear of being laughed at or ostracized, feeling ignored when you open up to people. This is a writing strategy called "saving the cat," which can be boiled down to making sure your character does/experiences something that other people agree with or empathize with; the more repulsive or unlikeable your character, the more important that this step happens early in your story and is repeated. The novel American Psycho is not as useful at utilizing this as the film is, but to be fair the novel is far more focused on being a critique of 80s consumerism/toxic masculinity and a catharsis for Bret Easton Ellis (who clearly and unironically loathes women and children). While the film is far more focused on being entertaining first and foremost, and then being a critique of the 80s. The film obviously cuts a lot of the woman-hate and I don't recall children being harmed at all. Some of the criticism of masculinity is toned down too.

With autism treatment specifically, behavior, occupational, and speech therapy tend to be the most commonly used. I think in your case, speech therapy might have helped more than psychotherapy. Speech therapy focuses on things like understanding social norms, figures of speech, identifying emotions, etc. It is not about discussing how you feel and is more about how to functionally communicate better. Psychotherapy, at least to me, has its uses for things like grief counseling, marriage counseling, and addiction recovery. It’s not commonly used for autism since the problems someone autistic has don’t fall into those categories often.
