Why shouldn’t an accuser’s (or plaintiff’s) testimony be weighed as much as a defendant’s (or respondent’s) ?

If you think prosecutors bring cases they don't believe they can win, I got a bridge for you. The hurdle to actual prosecution of rape based on a victim's/alleger's personal statement alone, especially acquaintance rape, is extremely high. It is very high even with extrinsic supporting evidence.

The assertions you’re making need some quant analysis.
  • Please provide numerical data on convictions and civil findings against an accused rapist who was convicted based solely on the victim’s testimony.
  • Then go find data on how many women reported rape but 1) no arrest was made, 2) prosecutor declined to prosecute (whether due to lack of corroborating evidence at the outset or other factors, broken down by rationale), and/or 3) a prosecuted rape's verdict was not guilty, guilty only on a lesser charge, and where a civil finding for defendant as a result of lack of “hard” evidence. Break out by scenario.
  • Then go pull data on women raped who didn’t report. Break it out however you like.
The case you quoted merely says that testimonial evidence is evidence, and that witness credibility is relevant. Wow.

Exceptions are not the rule.

Nope. A defendant can provide his own testimony disputing the allegations. And a court should weigh both.

Getting justice for the crime of rape is not "petty gender vengeance."

As I said, the legal system is poorly equipped to handle matters of intimate person violence. But short of vigilante alternatives, it's what we've got, so to be an effective part of the rule of law in general, it needs to account for the situations it claims it intends to address.

And if you think that for most women, making a rape charge is just another item on the low-intensity to-do list for the day, you're being willfully obtuse. If you can even get a case to prosecution (infinitesimal probability), you are facing being stripped bare publicly, not to mention immense actual and psychic distraction and severe reputational damage. So sure, it's a "choice." And the "choice" that most rape victims make is to have to accept that the process of attempting to realize justice is both mostly pointless and as bad or worse than the original crime.

I'm not gonna grant you any special treatment compared to other victims of horrendous crimes.
You should still go through the legal system and testimony alone should never ever cut it.
