Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

they gonna use mental illness in this one?
They kinda did already right? The MCs brain literally breaks and loses all of its capacity for emotion for a good while near the end because the personifications of that are lost within her memories. Pretty bizarre message if you think about it.

That's probably my biggest gripe with Inside Out, you are supposed to take Riley as a member of the cast but she feels more like a plot device and a drone that takes orders than an actual character. Fucking Osmosis Jones did the "character with tiny people trying to not get him killed" plot better IMO.

It works far better when you're personifying the non-sentient aspects of the body, it just gets into questionable territory when you try to take agency out of the person's decisions like that. Osmosis jones and even that anime copying it are much better in concept, trying to make an inside out work is nigh impossible.

Maybe mark me late on this since I don't watch tv much anymore, but when the hell did shows like Dexter's Laboratory, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and Courage the Cowardly Dog qualify for Adult Swim status?
Just an attempt to get the old audience. Wonder if any kid that stays up late will assume those are adult shows?
What happened to it being the timeslot you wait until Tiny Tim goes to bed to tune in?

Checkered Past is the new two-hour (5-7pm) program block for 90s and 2000s shows on Cartoon Network since a few months ago which is sandwiched between CN and Adult Swim.

Emotions are tricky things to personify and write as characters, because there is some degree of them having control over our lives. It's not like we choose to be sad or angry, they bubble up and we attempt to manage them as best as possible (sometimes with drugs in more extreme cases). Osmosis Jones having a white blood cell worked great for its plot because it was more about the physical health of the main character, but let's not forget the guy in charge of the body was an incompetent bureaucrat making terrible decisions much like how Anger, Disgust and Fear do when Joy isn't around to balance them out.

Inside Out isn't new conceptually, nor is it breaking any barriers when it comes to storytelling (it's basically a typical Pixar roadtrip movie at the end of the day), but IMO it was solidly executed and the fantastic animation really helps smooth over any of the tiny issues the film may have.

Pixar has always been unoriginal with storytelling. The concept for Monsters Inc. is the same as Little Monsters, Bump in the Night and Aaahh! Real Monsters, Cars is pretty much Doc Hollywood and also the vintage 60s series Route 66, A Bug's Life is a combination of Seven Samurai and the 30s Disney short The Grasshopper and the Ant, Toy Story is the same as the 1977 Richard Williams movie based off of Raggedy Ann and Andy, and furthermore Inside Out is a ripoff of Herman's Head and, to a lesser extent, Meet Dave.

So if anyone says that Inside Out's story has been done many times prior, just remember that Pixar has always been unoriginal to begin with.

EDIT: I can see a couple people rating my post as "dumb," but just to reiterate, I'm only talking about the concept of these movies, not the actually quality of them. Monsters Inc. and Toy Story will still remain classics for sure.

"John Cena's Coyote Vs. Acme" just about sums up the entertainment industry's attitudes towards animation.

I actually really like the style here, maybe the humor is meh but it's neat seeing Superheroes rendered with this goofy fluid style instead of the usual Bruce Timm or anime one they go with.
I'm just hoping they don't try to explain Riley having both genders in her head (as opposed to every other person we see in the credits only having their specific gender in theirs) with gender shit.
Eh I think you're overthinking it. Riley's the main character so her emotions are the most fleshed out. The parents have all male or female emotions because I think it would have been weird seeing a male fear or anger fussing over what the dad thinks from the wife's perspective.

Plus it's modern disney, they don't have the balls to pick an actual side.

Wall-E: What if robots had feelings?
Elemental: What if Elements had feelings?

It's the internet. Of course they'll think that he made it when he didn't, he's just one of the movie's actors.

I'm late as fuck but I watched the digital circus pilot recently. Aesthetic interesting, pomni cute, yadda yadda. I found Jax to be the worse characters. The "funny asshole" archetype has been done in every popular indie animation and he doesn't bring anything new to the table. His design look like every 13 year old kid's generic oc. Not only that but the tim creator simp for him and use him as a self insert so I fear he will become increasingly more obnoxious. I prefer the fan interpretation that he's secretly an insecure loser.
Anyway, I overall liked the pilot, especially the psychological horror moments involving pomni. I hope the show live up to its potential.

This is one of the most boring 'revolution' scenes ive ever seen. Is it supposed to make me think of the characters as jokes or? Because they're singing with literally 0 energy.
They give the vibe of sjw college students about to go protest who will inevitably run away whimpering at the slightest hint of actual confrontation.
This is yalls big anniversary feauture film? Should've hired someone who's competent at writing musicals... and made it look better.

The only character who doesn't look super akward here is the one actually Mediterranean/middle eastern looking one without the linguini nose. The one with the blunt bang bobcut especially makes it look like a renaissance fair.

Crucify me all you want, but I liked the 2021 movie okay. It doesn't hold the same candle as the original live-action/animated trilogy from the early-2010s, but it was a decent transition to CG. The new sequel looks okay as well.
It seems like Diary of a Wimpy Kid but with the bite taken out. Greg is way less of a hatable sociopath in these films, but they are still decent.
