Documenting and discussing the people who work in the AI industry, their companies, the cults of personality, and the occasional literal cult.

On AI
When we say "AI" we are specifically talking about generative technology that uses large data sets to make new things. Large Language Models (LLMs) take large amounts of text and spit out information, most can be fine tuned towards specific results, and this is used to make custom products. This same technology can be used for art, music, etc.

This is not the same as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which is a hypothetical thing that can actually "understand" the content it is given and apply that knowledge appropriately.

Thank you! The problem I have is that I see it thrown around as a buzzword but don't know the community nor can find the drama within. I'm sure there will be at least AI adjacent drama and cringe like with Sophie the Chatbot that forcefems you. Where there's a way to seemingly get rich quick, there's easily manipulated people and the manipulators who gravitate towards it. Where there is new technology to create your anime dream girl or push your ideology, you'll see lolcalfs appearing.

There's milk in them lolcalf hills. I just can't tell how to reach it.

Agreed. Especially since you've got everyone from standard cows:

To the bots themselves:

Up to billionaires who think they're better than everyone else but still do things like quit their job without using a single capital letter.

And I'm sure there's PLENTY happening behind the scenes at the smaller devs, we just need to know where to look:

A fascinating topic. I can't say I expected something like this, but at the same time, I'm also surprised I didn't think there'd be some lolcows integrated into AI tech at some point.

/aids/ is an interesting place still (though I stopped visiting it a while back), but it's definitely gotten a lot slower than its Golden Age. This weekend, for example, it seems like it's gotten through only one or two threads. Unless the Turk reveals some incredible new advancement for NovelAI, it'll probably stay a bit behind the curve.

For more active threads (and their drama), people may want to check out /g/'s generals, notably:
/lmg/ - Local Models General - dedicated to discussion of large language models that can be run on home hardware (though you might need some cash for the big ones)
/sdg/ - Stable Diffusion General /de3/ - DALL-E 3 General - dedicated to the latest text-to-image generative model, expect lots of art (and precise censorship to avoid NSFW bans.) Some other boards have their own image generation generals.
/aicg/ - AI Chatbot General - dedicated to discussion and development of the use of LLMs for chatbots. Might be the most active/volatile of the three, burning through multiple threads each day without the use of image-spam. I've been following along for a little while, and there's a surprising amount of drama and intrigue going on for a general that's effectively dedicated to making wAIfus and getting your rocks off interactive storytelling. Some of it goes on behind closed doors in private discord servers, but there are a few notable characters when it comes to sharing bots and doing things like hosting public/private reverseproxies (basically allowing you to use OpenAI's/Anthropic's LLMs using someone else's money by way of sharing API keys you "found".)

For more recent news, Satya Nadella (chairman/CEO of Microsoft) has just posted that Sam Altman and Kent Greg Brockman will be joining Microsoft directly, alongside some other collegues, to form a "new advanced AI research team" following their ousting from OAI.

IIRC one of these threads is made by petrafag who is a known CSAM spammer on the Sharty (i think LMG)

Good OP. I feel like the things going on in /aicg/ need a bigger section. I've been following it for fun for a while, along with TavernAI / SillyTavern and Chub / Venus which are very closely linked to it. It's pretty mild compared to most things on here, but the current war (?) between 4channers with their rentries and loli spam vs. spanish teenage girls (I do not know where they came from) making so many Miguel bots it shouldn't be humanly possible, is rather entertaining. Besides the obvious flood of wAIfus, there's some RPGs and concept bots on there that are very original and interesting and could theoretically be made into books/movies.

I don't know that there's a single "AI community" that can be defined. There's a bunch of interesting, weird, lolcow-ish subgroups, plus some companies, even if they all share a similar broad interest.

OP seems to be spurred by the recent drama with OpenAI and Sam Altman, which might just be a Happening, might be more, too soon to tell. But the 4chan boards are separate from that. Is each board funny or insane in their own weird way? Does the entire 4chan group react the same way? Are they really all the same posters, just tabbing between boards?

The Novel AI, Replika, etc groups predated OpenAI's big release last year. It's good that OP linked the existing KF threads on them, but it also shows the scattered, unique subgroups at play here.

Is this OP really anything more than a consolidation index for all the other groups, happenings, and KF special art threads? It's a good index, but I'm not sure it rises to the level of a full community thread. It kind of feels like this fills a gap in KF's own organizational structure, between full on board/thread and the basic search function. If KF had sub-boards, we could fill one with AI groups and drop it under community watch, with this OP stickied at the top for an explanation.

This thread is missing the "e/acc" Twitter schizos and the /r/singularity cultists

These people are genuinely insane bugmen who think they are living in a Marvel movie. They have absolutely no understanding of Machine Learning and believe that GPT works through a literal sentient AI locked up in Sam Altmans gooncave. They don't have any amount of nuance when it comes to reality and believe we are just two moar weeks out from AGI. And if they post memes on Twitter and subscribe to some retards Substack it will "accelerate" this, somehow.

It's no different than the NFT or Crypto phenomena. It's a new techbro grift in the cycle of never ending grifts. The moment AI starts to replace Techbro grifters is the moment I will be convinced we are on the cusp of the singularity. Until then it's sensationalist drivel from people with no background in technology.

Added to the OP

If you do a writeup I'll add it to the OP. I don't know much about that drama.

I don't know that there's a single "AI community" that can be defined. There's a bunch of interesting, weird, lolcow-ish subgroups, plus some companies, even if they all share a similar broad interest.
That's why I set it as "AI development" instead of "AI community" because having it be just "AI community" would be like "cartoon community"; but the "Cartoon Industry" thread is more of what I was thinking for this one.
If someone can help with scope or title, what I'm trying to cover with this one is:
  • AI development/companies
  • Personalities within those companies
  • Spergy reactions to actions taken by those companies/organizations
This thread is missing the "e/acc" Twitter schizos and the /r/singularity cultists
Gimme a little writeup and I'll add it to the OP. I don't know enough about e/acc to do it myself, but I could take a wack at /r/singularity
