It boggles my mind that people in the UK keep indoor only cats. I can see in other countries where predators are a serious risk, that you need to keep them indoors. But most people I've met who don't let their cats outside also don't provide enough enrichment indoors, so the cats are just miserable and make for the door whenever its open.
Cats are serial killers and domestic terrorists, even when they're well fed and want for absolutely nothing. They are worse than foxes imho. A fox will slaughter an entire flock of hens in one go, but unless it's disturbed or chased off it'll put each body away in a catch for future chicken dinners. I've seen cats kill, eat little or nothing of the prey, get bored, and then abandon the little corpse to stalk and hunt another unsuspecting creature. They are ruthless predators that kill for pleasure and they have driven multiple species extinct all over the world.

Barn cats are a necessary evil. Pet cats should be strictly supervised on their visits into the neighbourhood, otherwise they'll commit horrendous war crimes for shits and giggles.

Yeah I get that argument. I'm not overly convinced that where I live, or where I was living when I signed a contract saying I'd provide outside access, it really makes much of a difference cos its a bit concrete jungle. Everything is already decimated, even in spring we don't get birdsong.

My cat who hunts basically only kills rats (yes I know how bad that is for him, if you have tips on how to stop him, let me know!), because that is the only wildlife anywhere near, so tbh I think he does a service to the neighbourhood. If I had a decent sized garden I'd get cat proofing around it to stop others coming in and mine getting out to minimise their impact while providing them enrichment from outdoors. Here it wouldn't help anyway cos there's like 20 cats who go outside in a tiny area.

I'm guessing 80% of the cat owners where I live keep them indoors only, for good reason. We have a pretty big hawk and coyote population, not to mention a buttload of traffic in the rest of the city. I've had cats all of my life and they've never been indoor/outdoor cats. It's crazy irresponsible to let cats roam both because you're running the risk of them getting slaughtered by wildlife and because they're out there killing birds left and right.

Depending which breed of feline. Most cats are harmless, but then you have wildcats that are deadly predators
Very few cats are harmless. Even the spoiled overbred seat cushion that was my SILs ragdoll underwent a startling transformation into a fast moving predator when she saw a mouse.

Despite our success with dogs, we've yet to achieve the same degree of reprogramming with cats.

Normally I would hate to contribute to further cat sperging, but since this is Polissa's thread it's SOP.

In the US, cats kill 10% of the local bird population every year. If you love birbs, please keep your cats indoors.

I'd say domestic indoor cats are very harmless and calm whenever they want to be. Depending on the breed, they cat easily be vocal, energetic and/or playful

I'm really high and it's Thanksgiving so I'm gonna make this an in and out joke that is subpar at best, but here it goes:

I noticed the "mother of cats" title in the thread, but given the recent turn of events, what a neglectful "mother." 😅 At least we can laugh about it, and that's something to be thankful about. Who knew something so terrible could provide so much amusement?

I didn't know it was frowned upon to let cats outside until I was an adult either. My rescue contract specified that I must provide outdoor access and people still come at me about it ffs.

This is a major cultural difference between the United States and Great Britain. Here, any reputable cat rescue will make adopters sign a contract indicating that the cat will be kept strictly indoors. Letting the cat outside constitutes a breach of contract and the rescue will repossess the cat. It's seen as cruel to let them outside unsupervised. Burgerland has a lot more cars than Bongistan, more extreme weather in some areas, and the predators are large enough to pose a threat to a cat. I don't think you lot have any critters big enough to take out a cat.

This issue has actually started as many fights in online communities as the "shoes indoors" debate, so I just wanted to address the cultural aspect before anyone from Burgerland roasts you. ❤️ YOU ARE ALL VALID!!!!!!

i didn't know flying squirrels even lived in burgerland until a hick family member posted on Facebook about how the cats brought in the third flying squirrel that year. apparently not only do they live here, they're endangered! super cool to learn about the wildlife in my region :) what state does pissa live in again?

Cat Sperg:*

I have had the misfortune of accidentally running over two cats in all my years of driving. Driving in busy, congested areas and a cat that bolts in panic leaves very little room for avoidance (one cat made it off the road but for some reason doubled back. I cried the rest of the way to work). Then I looked up longevity. Indoor cats average 10-20 years while outdoor cats only average 2-5 years.

With predation, traffic and the random lunatic that enjoys catching them to torture/kill, it seems clear to me that if one loves their pet cat, the safest option (for the cat and birds) is to keep it inside. YMMV

*Can’t spoiler, the option (and all the others) are grayed out for me.

What Polissa has allowed to happen with her animals is reprehensible, and criminal. She should be punished but that’s unlikely.

Two things: Joh! says "us", so it looks like that while he is not allowed to eat at Meemaw's with Pissa and the rest of the family, at least as far as he is concerned, they are still an item.
Since he mentions his hourly rate after, I assume the person who owes him money is his boss (probably working a cash in hand job), so "us" would be him and his fellow employees rather than him and Polissa.

Indoor-outdoor cat discourse is the twee version of pitbull discourse.

I personally do indoor, and agree with the bird concerns, but my real reasons are selfish: growing up, we had a ton of indoor/outdoor cats, and it sucked to be the one to get up before school and find one of your best friends has been hit by a car and maybe crawled a little way before they died.

There are indoor-outdoor cats in the neighborhood and I say hello to them and pet them, but my little pal is staying inside since they don't make a reflective kitty vest with safety flashers and a dashcam that catches the license plate so I can exact revenge if the first two measures fail.

I was firmly in the “it’s cruel to keep cats cooped up inside” camp until I heard a cat be snatched up by a fisher cat. The noise that poor kitty made will haunt my dreams. Keep them inside. I wish I’d known earlier that it’s fairly easy to keep them happy and engaged while being inside pets.

Oh wow, I never knew Nova Scotia had flying squirrels!
Nova Scotia has two species of flying squirrels: the northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) and the southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans). Both species are nocturnal, but differ in size, pelage, and behaviour. Northern flying squirrels are found throughout the province. The smaller southern flying squirrel is found only in two areas: the Gaspereau valley and Kejimkujik National Park.

That is my worst fucking nightmare.

Yeah, there's people who will run over cats for fun and even poison them with antifreeze.
