I can think of a couple of situations in which that may not be true, but they all involve the prospie employer being insanely stupidly forthright and saying the silent part out loud, e.g.:
"We didn't hire you because we don't need anyone else in the office taking maternity leave."
"This company doesn't hire black people or Jews."
"We would have hired you, but according to this very legitimate-looking New Zealand agriculture forum, you have AIDS and are gay. But we're happy to help you with a defamation lawsuit against this Lunar James man."
I've heard about this phenomenon in cows called "freemartins" - a female calf who's a dizygotic twin with a male calf. All freemartins have a male twin. Something about the shared intrauterine environment causes the female calf to not develop normally, so at maturity you get a masculinized, sterile, female cow.
Sometimes the most dominant hen in an all-female chicken flock will develop roosterish characteristics, like an enlarged comb and wattle, spurs, may begin crowing. IIRC this isn't the hen undergoing a sex change, and her eggs are still fertile, it's an epigenetic adaptation.
I don't think animals have a gender identity, apart from behavior like squatting to pee vs. raising a leg. I do not think most animals are capable of understanding the difference between genders, let alone a desire to cross over and become the other gender.
The troons I see in the wild at the gym always looked wildly uncomfortable to be there. They'd go to all the girly group fitness classes (like Barre) and make weird faces the whole time. They also changed in a stall to avoid having anyone actually see them unclothed. For the most part I just felt bad for them, as the gym had no alternative to choosing either a male or female locker room, and while the women's might have been mildly hostile, the men's locker rooms at Equinox Chestnut Hill were a known zone for faggots to come onto each other in the steam room. I had a male friend who worked there as a massage therapist - he was told once to offer 10-minute chair massages in the men's locker rooms and he flatly refused, because too many men would come onto him in there.
There's a discreet way to take medication, and then there's whatever this person is doing. (Maybe setting a timer to play nyan cat every 4 hours with a blinking lock screen saying 'ESTROGEN TIME!')
You want to help them, but they're un-helpable. If you tell them the truth, they just get mad and try to get you banned from the hugbox. There is really no point, because if you tell the troons what they say they want to hear, they know it's a lie and they don't believe you; but if you get real with them, they go full 41% mode and cry to the mods that you are "LITERALLY KILLING" them with observations like "women don't get 5'o clock shadows."
You get banned these days on Reddit if you say anything with even a whiff of tranny-negativity to it. I got a 3-day global ban for posting "lmao tranny" on a missing persons Canada post (I uploaded the post here). No real content there except noting that this person "Lillly" is/was a troon.
Trans people are like 3 year olds in the sense that 3 year olds are also intensely anxious that wearing the "wrong" clothes or accessories will cause their gender to change.

I enjoy imagining the disappointment that after so many weeks bandaged up they remove the dressings and they see the more-or-less same ugly mug they self-paid luxury used car money to feminize staring back at them with just a little bit of a brow shave and jawline change and a teeny bit of nosejob.
Usually, plastic surgeons are doing it right if you can't tell work was done, but since an MtF tranny is basically just a bimboification fetish with extra steps, the less-is-more approach is counterproductive.
