Furry Convention Drama - Because you can't have a couple thousand dog fucking enthusiasts under the same roof without shit hitting the fan

And this upcoming FWA is not only gonna have the Marriott Marquis (the hotel where the con is centrally located) but it will also include the nearby Atlanta Hilton and Hyatt Regency. Three whole skyscraper hotels chartered out for 2024, and as of two Wednesdays ago the blocks opened up and sold out rapid-fire.

FWA seems to have prime real estate that it could potentially beat out the attendance records of MFF or Anthrocon if either of their two locations can't fix their constant lack of hotel space year after year, but FWA continues to scoop up more than just those three entire blocks of downtown Atlanta.
Shortly after this post, FWA has only gained more ground with their announcement earlier this week that they've built up relations with the Aloft Atlanta hotel 2 blocks away from the main hotel, making it 4 hotels total now. If the current trend continues, like Big O said, FWA is on a fast track to toppling over AC and MFF. To give you an idea, in 2022 FWA had 7212 and it shot up to 10328 in 2023.

More does not necessarily mean a better con experience, more attendees will mean longer lines at registration, an overcrowded con-space and longer lines at events with people excluded due to capacity issues.

Watch this be the beginning of gatekeeping in the furry Fandom.

They wouldn't gatekeep to keep out pedophiles
They wouldn't gatekeep to keep out zoophile

But they might gatekeep so conventions can still be manageable.

Who's ready for the lottery???

Can’t wait for the inevitable horror stories of the 6 hour long HIV testing lines where the test rate is 80% positive , the 5 overdoses a night and all 4 hotel pools getting clogged up with shit filled diapers by the third day

They indirectly gatekeep the pedos and zoo by having room lotteries, somewhat. Speaking of room lotteries, the melodrama these furfags have over this shit is always a good laughter. They'll make a tweet saying how they're "burnt out" or how "rooms are sold out before the passkey link opens", because heaven forbid staff and volunteers get a room to help your convention happen in the first place. They are pounding sand over a damn hotel room that isn't in the main hotel, incredible!

Also I heard Further Equinox has a system where the higher you registration is, you got priority for booking rooms. So this had some people purchasing said highest tier to grab multiple rooms and hand them out to friends, but I haven't read much up on this yet.

Last year, New Year's Furry Ball briefly caught my attention because they seemed to randomly ban people from the event simply for joining their telegram "waiting room" for the telegram chat. When I posted briefly about it in this thread at the time, I only had limited information about the specific ban, and the general consensus was they just preemptively banned someone who had an inclination for constantly tweeting shitty political takes.

Fast-forward a few months to the next year's event, and apparently, they're back to banning people again without explanation. The ban reason for each of these is a form letter stating they were banned for "past offensive remarks". And full disclosure, a lot of this transpired through Telegram, so I can't completely confirm this 100%. I did however privately reach out to the second person here, and they did provide proof they were sent ban notices.

Anyways, this first caught my attention when I was sent screenshots from someone who posted about their odd exchange in NYFB's "waiting room" telegram chat, where they were asked to provide a link to their social media to prove they were a real person. When they did, they were told by a mod there wasn't enough information and needed to ask someone currently in the chat to vouch for them. After naming someone, they were told "Not good enough, name someone else, and I'll give you a couple of days to figure it out".

About 30 minutes later, all their posts were deleted, the mod in the previous screenshots blocked them, and they received a form letter stating they were banned for "past behavior".

Someone else in the furry chat responded along the lines of "Oh shit that reminds me, I'm going to that event, I should join that chat." They joined the waiting room, only to get banned about two minutes later and sent the exact same form letter as the first person. They went to the event without any issue previously so they were surprised about the ban.

This caught the attention of a third-party observer, and they decided to test this by joining the chat, too. Immediate ban in about two minutes as well.

From what I can tell, none of these three people interacted with each other beforehand (other than all of them being present in the same furry chat).

About the NYFB situation, there are a few possibilities; 1. (The most likely) There might be some kind of local blocklist of "Furries Non Grata", 2. This group might be de facto invite only, but set as public for some ulterior motive, or 3, some bot or moderator is glitched/powertripping. I wonder if anyone with a "clean" social media could join it?

If you have bluetooth on by default, you're a retard.
Smart phones (as they exist today) have been around in their current form for nearly two decades now. It amazes me that people still haven't learned to turn off wifi and bluetooth in public places (and especially at conferences). Really they should never be enabled unless you're actively using them no matter where you are, but I digress.

I think too many people rely on bluetooth smartwatches or earphones nowadays.

Hell, I never knew any of that, and I’ve been using smart phones for years. Why would I turn that shit off? It’s how I hook it to my car/watch etc. I’m really not surprised that most people don’t think of this….

Neither of those require an always-on connection unless they're actually in use (headphones especially). I guess the smartwatch won't bleep and blip for every notification if it can't phone home to the mothership but damn, during a conference I'd rather have a "dumb smart watch" that just tells the time and leave all the radios turned off.

Back when modern Smartphones were still new, it was common for people to turn off Wifi and Bluetooth when leaving their office/home due to them bugging them constantly to connect to a Wifi network it detected. After those popups began getting hidden by default, people just leave their Wifi and Bluetooth on all the time.

But the sad fact is most smartphone owners are too dumb to understand how to change the settings, let alone comprehend why they should do it.

the whole point of a smartphone is to be as user friendly as possible
gone are the days where more complex tech was harder to use, now if you want any features whatsoever odds are you're getting a product for toddlers

Needless to say, shenanigans have ensued during MidwestFurFest's registration day. If you have bluetooth on by default, you're a retard.

It's only iPhones that are dumb enough to acknowledge every single Bluetooth pairing request without any sort of timeout and effectively let themselves get DDoSed, as well as the passive connecting devices like dildos that don't have any security for ease of use.

More so that leaving the older inefficient radios enabled when not needed would sooner drain your battery. This isn't as much as an issue today. Unless you're at Defcon, leaving things enabled isn't usually a concern, but depends on your privacy tolerance.

Even some of the most tech nerdy of us aren't doing that. I want my watch, headphones, and everything else to stay connected or in the case of my car, to automatically pair. I'm absolutely not going to be manually fucking around turning bluetooth on and off, especially when in the case of headphones a public place is where I use them most.

It's an unreasonable expectation that people should be manually turning this stuff off, especially as more and more things are connected via it.
