Its heartbreaking but most of the dogs in shelters are in shelters for a reason, even if they aren't a shitbull or other notoriously violent breed. The feel good stories about Fido getting adopted and getting a loving home are few and far between and if you want to do something like this, you have to get the dog when they're young, train them properly and ensure they don't form bad habits like shitting on the floor or eating your child's arm up to the elbow.
