Plagiarism is basically theft. People don't steal because they're motivated by malice, they steal because they want to get something for nothing. To be fair to Harris, Somerton's videos are insufferable. He basically portrays himself as if he's gay Jesus bringing wisdom to the masses in his videos. He also portrays it as if the wisdom he's providing has been silenced for decades and is only just now being revealed to people. And he literally just copied it from somewhere else and has been passing it off on his own. I think he should've focused more of the video on this aspect of Somerton's content as his messiah complex was a near constant in his content.

When you separate the "oh and it's about gay shit" from it, he's making thousands of dollars off essentially manipulating an audience of mostly naïve leftists that will never read any of the books or articles he stole from.

I will say I don't think it's worth making such a fuss about how hurt you are about 4 months of work when you then sold it to mentalfloss of all places, also not surprising that he was never contacted about the dispute if he sold the rights to them that places the entire legal dispute status onto mentalfloss not him as he no longer has any ownership of it.

Probably also has no fucking clue about Fair Use and what "transformative work" means. If Historian just had a still JPEG and simply narrated the whole thing - yeah, that "could" ground for a strike.

But the dude had animation, voice acting, SFX, music and whatnot - that in my book is transformative enough even moreso because it's an article about a HISTORICAL EVENT, which explains the previous "could" part as since it's an accounting of a historical event, in order to be as truthful and transparent as possible you HAVE to use pre-written info.
