Not gonna lie, I don't blame 'em. If I were the leader of some shithole country being invaded by another much larger shithole country, and I knew taking foreign journos on a "curated" trip through my capital's "vibrant LGBT scene" would result in a new haul of missiles to chuck at the larger shithole's military, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But if you're trying to cheerleader for a group, do it factually. Is Ukraine a better place for a gay man to live in than Russia? Probably. These people come from the generation who spent the formative years of their life spending most of their time on the internet instead of IRL socializing, especially during the time they transitioned from childhood into adulthood. They spent their time consuming pop culture, indulging their little niche interests, and spending time on social media and other websites with like-minded people with the same interests and opinions as them.

Because of their arrested development and stunted maturity they have a very childish way of processing information. They get emotionally invested in the things they support, which kills any nuance or objectivity a normal person would have. If they support something, say a country in a war, in their minds it automatically means that country MUST stand for everything they belive is "good" and "right". They support them, so that means they're the "good guys" and must be morally, ethically, and ideologically in lockstep with themselves, right? That's what decades of pop culture has taught them.

They're just like children. If they like it/support it then they'll engage in all kinds of mental gymnastics to maintain that "good" image in their mind. If they're provided evidence that the country/group/whatever they support/like doesn't line up exactly with how they've built it up in their mind they will scream, yell, throw tantrums, gnash teeth, and claim that this new evidence is all lies and propaganda to smear whatever it is they support, and accuse the person telling them the truth of being a (insert whatever "bad guy" here). There can be no grey areas because that would break their black/white good vs. evil world view. The Nazis/Empire/Voldemort/Russians/whatever "bad guys" are always evil and wrong and have no good or redeeming values. The Allies/Rebel Alliance/Dumbledore's Army/Ukranians/whatever "good guys" are always moral and just, and have no negative traits or flaws. They cannot allow themselves to entertain that there are grey areas, or that the Nazis had some good people in them, or that the Empire actually did a lot of good for a lot of people, because that would mean admitting they were wrong about something or that there might be some things about themselves that others would see as morally bad.
