In 2004 Jeff Kinney published Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a journal featuring the writing of a fictional middle schooler named Greg Heffley, to the educational website Funbrain. In 2007, he adapted it into a book series which became very popular for youth all over the world. It includes bits and pieces from the original online journal.

Kinney then released the second book, Rodrick Rules, the following year. In the following years, he released The Last Straw, Dog Days, The Ugly Truth, and Cabin Fever. These books also contain segments from the original online journal.

In 2010, the original book was turned into a live-action movie. Trailer:
Two more movies, based on the next three books, were released the following years. Trailers:
In the years since, Jeff Kinney has continued to release book after book about Greg Heffley, who’s still in middle school as of the eighteenth book. He has also released an animated movie and animated specials of the DOAWK characters. Trailers:

I am still wondering why everyone is so obsessed with this series. Is there something I am just not getting about it?

Because it seems to be just pure nostalgia that has created such a large and obsessive fanbase.

It was very popular during its peak. But I think the current fandom comes from the fact that the awful fourth movie was such a downgrade from the first three movies. The original movie trilogy is okay, but the casting choice for Rodrick is infinitely better than the one for the fourth.

The fandom around Rodrick is…infested with fujoshis and people who think Rodrick is the only “normal character”.
These made me feel smart because you could easily read one in a day. Always an exciting time when the Scholastic Book Fair came to the school.

Also, was Funbrains the site that hosted Poptropica?
Funbrain was the site that hosted Poptropica. Funbrain is still around to this day. (Link)

I know with the movies, Rodrick is "attractive" to the female demographic as a bad boy or something.

Anyway, I remember I would get the books and read them within one sitting.

How is this series still going? It's older now than the kids reading it

Kudos to Jeff Kinney for making my childhood better tho
Jeff Kinney originally planned on making five books. But I guess money is more important to him than anything at this point.

He’s the swoony goth boy who girls love so much. Idk why the movie casted such an actor for a heavy metal drummer.

oh man i loved diary of a wimpy kid, every so often i google pdf copies of them and reread them just to get that sweet sweet nostalgia feeling. my school used them to teach us English sentence structure and how to use slang and such. jeff kinney basically admitted years ago he keeps pumping them out because they make him money and it's easy to write.

i like how his books haven't slipped into the woke shit being pumped out to kids these days, reading some of the newer ones still manage to get a good laugh outta me.
