Something to keep in mind is this is not a victimless crime. The original author spent months researching this story and was likely paid a pittance for it. Whereas IH just read his article to some animation he commissioned and made 6 figures off it without even writing his name in the description. Had IH reached out to the company and received permission or just paid them some of the money from it, this wouldn't have been an issue. Or if he just didn't read off the article and instead made a unique script. But instead he did it this way which was the worst option possible.

I agree that the simplest option would have just been to add a source link and be done with it, but you are aware that any money would have gone to the copyright owner of the text, not to the original author who had already gotten paid with an Amazon coupon. I firmly agree with IH in denying any sort of monetary compensation to the aggregator. From a legal stand point, the original author never entered the equation, he's a non entity the moment he sold his cave story timeline. Now if we are going purely from a "moral" standpoint, yes, it would be ideal to write up a check for the original author, but again, this is purely a moral thing, you are definitely not obliged to do it and if anything the original author should be learning the lesson that selling your stuff cheap sometimes ends up being pretty expensive. Not that I blame him, being a freelance writer must suck mountains of dick.

I don't know who Somerton is outside of reading that he's a faggot writing about faggot stuff (though to be fair, the farms will give you that take about most things), I do know AND like IH, so I'm a lot more invested on what is a minor part of the hit piece than the main dish. I imagine that the Somerton part got more traction with the breadtube types since it's "one of theirs" and the good ol ouroboros chomping on itself, so not surprised nobody seems to particularly care here while probably in Something Awful it's the opposite since they already knew IH is for I'm Hitler and they actually watched Somerton.
