Sega - It's more than just Sonic Autism

Because Souls IS the 3D equivalent of those oldschool 2D Beat 'em Ups you absolute goober. It's the same fucking game design (tm) principal: it's all about understanding enemy patterns, look for openings and control the mobs of enemies. The duo boss fights are right out of Souls and could be argued inspired the mobs of skeleton enemies AND the Gargoyle fight ANDDDDDD Ornstein & Smough!
I just button mashed my way through most of Golden Axe with my siblings as a snot-nosed brat in between slices of pizza at the pizza parlor. I definitely don't see the correlation with Souls-likes, something like a generic hack & slash button masher you saw a lot of in the PS2 era is probably closer to the natural evolution to 3D for the genre imo.

Oh! Look at Mr. Money Bags over here begging mommy & daddy "Please help me beat the vidya gibs me more mammy!" Just putting in those shekels, pay 2 win, shekel to win.

I think so, which is neat, but a full-on remake would be nice, like Super Mario RPG (though I think it would need more changes than that game did, mainly the first-person dungeons would need to go or be extensively overhauled imo).
"Golden Axe should be a soulslike." "Let's take the dungeons out of this dungeon crawler." Never thought I'd see the day when leaked internal Sega memos make more sense than the gay men community of the Farms. Sega Ages Phantasy Star already has automapping, fast-forward, and 2*xp mode. If that's not cutting it, maybe you just want a different game.

I feel like you haven't attempted to skip ahead to Phantasy Star 2 and gotten a load of its dungeons. Here's a dev quote for you (https://shmuplations.com/phantasystarii/):

Another issue was related to the dungeons, which were created by a new employee. Because he was new, he put a ton of effort into the maps and kind of overdid it… the game became more about the complex dungeons than anything else. I think you really see that on the Dezolis dungeons. They were really well done, and when Chieko Aoki saw them she didn’t want all the new employee’s work to be for naught, so we ended up using those maps… albeit with some mixed feelings. They contributed to the latter half of the game being unbalanced.

Also want to mentioned that I googled "phantasy star 2 map" and the first result is a Web 1.0-ish fan page with every rom for download... first time I've seen a search engine work right in years: https://fantasyanime.com/phantasystar2/

I can usually read sarcasm well through text but I'm not sure here lol
Yes and no. I expect to be enjoying the new Shinobi on my private island while I watch GTA6 burn through my binoculars. Sega have a decent enough track record of letting indies handle these old properties, at least lately. Panzer Dragoon Zwei remake is on its way. I may live to see the first actually good Altered Beast game. I got mine, guess most of you guys are still boned, sorry.

I'm still sad that Sega Ages is dead, it seems so on-brand for what they're supposedly trying to do here. Port the existing ones to Steam, put them into a bundle. Port of the rest of the ones stranded on 3DS to modern consoles. Anything. So far the new patch of "remakes" are all Unity recreations of Saturn-era games. I haven't heard about any "remasters" in the pipeline, but I'd be happy if the 7th gen Outrun and After Burner games made it to modern platforms, and it sounds a lot easier to do than a lot of this other stuff.

You know there's like 2 seconds of nu-Golden Axe footage and 1 second of it is dodge-rolling out of the way of a giant boss attack. Even though it's full 3D I really doubt they're setting out to make Beast Rider 2.

souls is the 3d equivalent of sonic the hedgehog because you roll around

This whole thing reeks of post-Hyenas desperation to me and I'm confident Sega will fuck it up as usual. I see Soul Hackers in that list of dormant IPs. How many fans of Soul Hackers do you know who like Soul Hackers 2? How many Soul Hackers 2 fans do you know in general? What, are they going to get fans of these IPs to work on them like Sonic Mania? From what I heard Sega of Japan got really butthurt about Mania, which is why those devs are off making that ugly clown game now that I'm excited for. Those dormant IPs have a specific charm and appeal (arcadiness and unabashed, plausibly deniable intentional cheese are common) that modern Sega is too out of touch to replicate on their own. We are also in a completely different ecosystem today than 10 years ago, let alone 20 years ago which still isn't far back enough for some of these IPs. Maybe not all of them have a modern equivalent that an indie dev has succeeded in replicating, but, uh, fuckin some of them do. I have a lot of problems with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, but it's not a simple task reaching the bar of being as close to real Jet Set Radio as that game is, and it doesn't even have NFTs or any retarded shit in it either. We're very far beyond the point of needing these games to be made by Sega, specifically.

I wanted to blame Atlus for Tokyo Mirage Sessions too but apparently that was a Nintendo producer's idea. What the fuck?

Let's improve the dungeons, not remove them. They look boring, they aren't designed interestingly, and personally I think first-person in JRPGs sucks too.

I typically don't like jumping ahead in a series. Maybe I should though, PS4 looks pretty good.

There's not much to go on but it looks kinda weird and cheap to me.

I liked what I saw in the two seconds of Golden Axe footage but I've never played BeastRiders so I'm not that apprehensive about Golden Axe going 3D (again).

I know some people were complaining that the graphics looked rather 7th gen for a game that'll presumably be on 9th gen consoles but I know the games are still in development and, honestly, 7th gen graphics still look pretty good to me.

Looks almost exactly like Shinobi 3DS, in both appearance and gameplay, but with hand-drawn graphics (And That's a Good Thing).

I like what's been shown of the graphic style, but the footage doesn't give much sense of what the game might actually play like, compared to the others. The enemies apparently have warning lights when they attack (so probably: some kind of dodge/parry emphasis) and I would expect some degree of RPG mechanics just because every fantasy game has to.

At worst it will be one more generic 3D hack and slash game, but it does look basically like Golden-Axe-but-in-3D. I can get behind the idea of it.

It just looked cheap to me, the concept is fine, good even. I'd need a better look at it though.

The other candidates for revival just got revealed through trademark filings. After Burner, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, Eternal Champions, House of the Dead, Kid Chameleon, OutRun, and Super Monkey Ball.
Alex Kidd might be good, I kinda liked the Shinobi-esque one. Eternal Champions is a weird choice, that game always seemed like shit to me, do people actually care about it at all? Power Instinct would make more sense if they're doing a fighting game.

The Sega CD version has a Wiki in the SuperCombo (Formerly SRK) Wiki which a dedicated group on Discord is handeling, so I guess? Last edit was last year though, so idk, maybe they lost interest or something.

Although I just checked FightCade 2, and the genesis version room (the only version they have) is dead so I guess it's not that popular.

Indeed Sega must really be on the ropes, if they have to resort to trying to make games people might actually be interested in.

OutRun has been conspicuously absent from the recent announcements. I'd be happy if they did HD ports of the 7th gen OutRun and After Burner -- possibly a better idea than attempting new ones.

HotD and Monkey Ball have both recent and already-announced upcoming games, only news there is that I don't understand how trademarks work.

I doubt there's room in this world for a new Eternal Champions, fighters below the AAAAA Tekken/SF level die on arrival half the time and a new EC sounds riskier than another Virtua Fighter. Alex Kidd was mostly never good, but has a surprising amount of recognition in shithole countries. Surprised anyone remembers Kid Chameleon but one dude in the comments seems pretty hyped so good for him.

8/10 lineup notwithstanding the inevitable "what what about FRANCHISE X" nattering. Bear in mind that these trademark filings don't actually go anywhere a lot of the time. I assumed that at least half of these franchises were deader than dead and would never ever get another game, so it does give some hope that anything can happen.

The Sega Cd version is quite a bit better. Anyway, it was a popular franchise in its day and supposedly only died because Sega of Japan forcibly euthanized it in revenge for Hiroshima. It's a recognizable name, sort of... possibly the most well-known 16 bit console exclusive fighter, although that is a very narrow field. tbh I'm surprised any Genesis fighter would hold any competitive interest in Current Year. Are people playing TMNT Tournament Fighters and WeaponLord, or what?

last I checked, Combo Breaker is the only main tournament that hosts that game, although it wasn't in this year (but Primal Rage was). The thing is that the SNES version is the only one that's played.

In 2021, they had a netplay only tournament, but back in 2019 it was live and in person

Might want to narrow that field even further, as the most well-known Genesis exclusive fighting game specifically (and only if games like TMNT don't count due to sharing names with other games on different platforms despite being its own unique version).

This has all been planned for years, they've been talking about it for ages, discussing what old IP would be worth bringing back, Hyenas has nothing to do with it, the obvious reaction to that was SEGA telling CA to sit down, shut the fuck up and focus on making Total War less shit

I'm surprised at stuff like Eternal Champions making the cut though, it was very much a product of its time
