Former rpg.net mod Blackhat Matt is getting the Alex Macris treatment, although honestly Beast kinda deserves it. No idea what Chill is or why it's singled out in particular.

While BlackHatMatt is undoubtedly a piece of shit, why ban the topic of his games? Why doesn't this include Changeling 20th Anniversary? (Maybe they just missed that one.)

How is discussing the games themselves in any way unsafe? I know Beast is trash, but that's never stopped RPG.net before, with the possible exception of FATAL. As for Chill, I know it's a 1990-vintage horror game, but I have no idea what the version McFarland worked on is like.

Anyone remember when words meant things?

There are a fair number of WW/Onyx Path veterans among the mods, and they don't want to come off as looking bad or have their favorite thing declared problematic. That's just my guess.

It's a horror game, centered on investigators versus monsters. Probably like Call of Cthulhu with less insanity/death.

Why exactly would it be unsafe to discuss those games? I mean, I know Macris pretty much pulled the legal katana halfway out of its sheath because the RPGnet spergs couldn't shut up. But I wonder if McFarland played the same card.

If I had to guess, Beast basically had people playing molesters, as they would go around abusing victims and then try to portray it as them teaching a lesson to said victims who totes deserved it, then surprise pikachu face when their victims turned back up with a shotgun. Never played Chill to know if that had creeper vibes too or not, but after he got outed as a child rapist it suddenly became, as they would say, "not a good look".

Also since beasts were outright tied to minority groups and their victims/foes stereotyped as "muh evil Maga Christians cis white males" the majority of those mods were 100% on board with all of the stuff in that book and will still defend it today. Plus Matt is absolutely not the only one of them that will one day be a confirmed sex pest.

Not just be surprised but the book explicitly made it clear that when their victims awoke as the antagonist splat in the book it was the case that they were in the wrong and retaliating was because they were evil. And had failed to learn the lesson from their abuse. Bear in mind the first supplement, the last one Matt worked on, had some of the beasts be out and out rapists. And if their victims retaliated that's because they were evil.

One of the sample NPC antyagonist/victims was a literal coma patient astral projecting to hunt monsters and the fans were looking at her character sheet and pointing out "oh, 3 dice in Manipulation. Clearly this bitch had it coming."

If anyone's not read the Fatal and Friends review of Beast give it a go. It's hard to believe it came out of Something Awful so recently since Beast is torn a new asshole in it.

Here's the review in question. And here's a shorter form review. Long story short, Beast portrays abusive people as an oppressed minority (read: alphabet people) and the people who seek to thwart the abuse as their oppressors.

Beast is such a nice microcosm of SocJus. It's about horrible people who claim to be the good guys while coming up with elaborate reasons as to why the abuse they dole out doesn't count as abuse, and the architect of the movement is a rapey pedophile. Naturally, that kind of thing makes NPCNet uncomfortable, especially since said rapey pedophile was one of their own until he got called out. An abuser who is an alphabet person is still an abuser. If more people realized that, it might threaten SocJus' claims to the moral high ground.

Something of a tangent from this thread since it's not about RPG.net but the way Beast went does make me angry at the wasted options.

The concept of Beast including the teaching of lessons via awful experiences actually has some validity. That they call their enemies Heroes even more so since to a degree I feel Beast is potentially the closest to a Grimm's Fairy Tales idea and there should have been an element of the Beast being the eternal losers to the concept, similar to how Mummys woke up and drifted back into slumber.

It could have been possible, were Beasts not tied in terms of their feeding to the outcome of the abuse rather than the lesson, that rather than them being the all powerful abusers they were instead the eternal losers. They were playing out stories/archetypes/fables in a manner that let others learn and grow from them and their purpose was to play a role, suffer and move on when the particular tale was done.

Instead it was closer to a rape fantasy and only got more so when the actual rape Beasts were added in.

Like a lot of things, Beast could've been cool, except it was a pedo rapist's Magical Realm. Vampires are basically walking rape allegories, after all, but in most cases the books aren't jerking them off about how noble they are while they're murdering their dinner. That was the real disconnect; beasts are perfectly fine as monsters in the WoD, but they weren't written as monsters, they were written as Tumblr users with superpowers. I mean, shit, they could've even kept the whole "we're teaching important lessons lol" thing, if it was clear from the narration that that was a bullshit line that the beasts tell themselves and others and they're actually just fucking monsters, but the book itself was all-in on that conceit.

Quoting myself here, but this is very important for the discussion about Beast.

It has come to my attention via /tg/ that in the one of the Chronicles of Darkness books (Beast: the Primordial) there is an example character who is a Mexican womanchild NEET that feeds on the suffering of others by puppeting trolls and driving people to suicide. She got her start on a forum dedicated to mocking cosplayers, found out about her magic powers when she successfully bullied a girl into killing herself, and then started lurking vidya and MRA forums so that she could use them to draw power from bullying games journalists and devs. Today she commands a veritable army of trolls who will dox and SWAT anyone to gain her approval, although as far as anyone knows she is a 20-something-year-old man.

The handle she chose for herself? Null Snyper.
