Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

This is fun once. Most of the thrill comes from getting all your shit to actually work. It was arguably more fun years ago when there weren't collection installs and you had to pray your load order was stable; something you could pat yourself on the back for.
I'm old enough to remember the early days of Skyrim mods, when armor recolors and new companions was considered impressive. I don't know what the fuck is going on now.

Personally I could care less about graphics. The game should be fun first.
Hell no. The game has to be functional first. Sadly, gone are the times of prodigies like Carmack who did his best to push boundaries within the limitations of the shitty hardware while still aiming for playability (Reminder that the OG Doom ran at 35fps, and Quake at 25 - even back then he knew that anything below 30 was undesirable). Nowadays you get half-assed, unoptimized slop that was outsourced to street shitters which looks 10 years out of date and runs like absolute garbage on modern systems, regardless of configuration. Todd legitimately deserves to have all of his limbs broken for saying that Saarfield runs great and you just need to upgrade your PC.

Only the part about Nintendo being as bad as Disney with its IP (which they treat as a joke). Everything else is just met with either ignoring or arguing that "you just don't get it".

I think you're starting to see journos shift towards calling them out, slowly. Not the Big Boys like... Fuck, what big boys are still relevant, is IGN still a thing? I don't know. But that's sort of where I'm going with that - increasingly the Big Boys are dying out, and the smaller names and independent journalists are rising to prominence, and a lot of those are willing to call Nintendo out.

Nintendo fans are a cult. They're mostly a lost cause. But the rest of the gaming world sees Nintendo for what it is.

I like your point. I think I'll add to it: funcional AND fun. It should run well, especially on a PC build where the graphics card is at least 300 dollars, well over the price of the CPU in many cases, which even then with the CPU, is a chip that has WAY more power than anything from 10-15 years ago when the Xbox 360 was still considered powerful with a 3 CORE processor.

If you in modern day, a triple A game dev, aren't taking advantage of multithreading, you are fucking incompetent. A game that's a Visual Novel or something in that tier of what it needs processing wise is chugging on a modern console (ps5, Xbox Series X) or a 1000+ dollar PC build, that is nothing but laziness.

What convinced me Nintendo is a cult was Mario Wonder.

A bunch of levels in this game came straight from Mario Maker, it can be completed in 4 seconds or less. I lost count of how many of those retarded fillers exist in the game.

It's just terrible, objectively garbage game design and by far the worst 2D Mario I've ever played. But look at the reception. Nintendo can release a dump of feces and nobody will care. it'll get 90+ on metacritic and sell millions of copies.

It never happened with any other company, maybe sports games but even Winning Eleven died so not even that.

Personally I could care less about graphics. The game should be fun first. I'm playing Metal Gear Solid on the master collection, and it's kinda a potato ngl. But it's fun and challenging. Being creative how you build your game is more important than hitting 8k
I myself am quite particular

^ this looks great. Clean and colorful, moves fluidly.

MonsterParty5.jpg
Lovely pixel art and charming character design. Beautiful, if unassuming.

pac.png
A timeless and iconic look with instant and universal appeal; nothing more need be said.

Another treat for the eyes. Abstract, yet with visual pop. Mesmerizing in motion.

roi.png
Best seen on vector display, but even on a standard monitor, boasts eminently smooth rotation and motion. Clean and instantly readable.

nh.png
Stark yet efficient. Doesn't tire out the eyes.

This video game relies on the player's imagination. Thus, it has the greatest graphics of all, if you're not an empty-skulled NPC with no inner world.

Now this right here looks like TRASH. Sickly colors, plastic textures, and a cluttered UI. Looks like Thomas Kinkade painted a bunch of creepy sex toys and somebody stuck in in a Chinese iPhone game. Dreadful; odious.

None. And that's because a name in big bold letters excites the jaded consoomer.
>Nintendrones trying to convince everyone their glorified BOTW DLC is an amazing landmark game with its reused map, barely any enemies added, the most annoying UI/menu system in years, a shitty time-travel story, and its all running on a mid 2010s iPad tablet that drops frames whenever you use the central mechanic of the game
>Snoys trying to convince everyone that their turbo leftist Spider-Man sequel is the greatest game of all time with its Bethesda-tier bugs, Latinx language system, awful story shitting on the protagonist to hype up Nigger-Man as literally Jesus, and numerous forced MJ sections where she defeats Venom enemies, which makes the antagonist look weaker and thus the protagonists look weaker because they were struggling with the antagonist
>Microtards trying to convince everyone that Starfield isn't a dogshit game that deserved to be nominated for GOTY despite all the issues that game has that I don't have the time to list here.

It's wild to see how delusional everyone has become. There's still Blizz cultists trying to defend Diablo 4 and retail WoW too. Corporations have become the new sports teams that everyone rallies around.

And let's not forget that BOTW itself is held up as a 10/10 OMFG BESTEST GAME EVER MADE!!!!11!!!SHIFT!!!!11!!! by Nintendrones.

At best it is a 7/10 title that rips off both the nu-Ass's Creed and Far Cry games while plopping those elements in gameworld with mechanics that are clearly just "inspired by" (stolen from) Skyrim. It's literally meant for children and Nintendrone fancucks. Hell, I'd argue the Nintendo Switch itself falls under that category.

"B-but it's PORTABLE!", they say. I say if you want to do actual portable gaming in 2023, the Steam Deck is a clearly superior option. If you're defending the Switch hardcore, you're either a child, a Nintendrone, or you're literally too broke to afford anything better.

The whole "BOTW reinvented open world!" argument got really old really fast.

Disagree there. What changed my mind was all the people expecting 60fps ultra while running a GTX 960, sub three second load times on a HDD (not even a SATA SSD, but an old spinny plater drive).

I think Nintendo's popularity comes from a combination of nostalgia and them always releasing games of at least mediocre quality or better.

Yup, both of these, exactly.

Everyone loves Nintendo the aesthetic, hell in this era practically to the level people love Disney the aesthetic. And Nintendo leans into this hard with cutesy merch, brand deals with everything, colorful characters and family-friendly IPs and, hell, even a theme park in Japan. All of which key off their few iconic franchises that have been around since the 80s or early 90s- Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokemon... To a lesser extent, Kirby, Starfox, and a couple of others. Nintendo fuels the brand loyalty based off nostalgia or perceived nostalgia.

And yeah, the other thing is that Nintendo very rarely releases bad games. They may be average, formulaic, dated... but they're still generally decent games. They have pretty good QC, and do game development well, if safely.

RE: Graphics. Blame the normies.

Listen to anyone talk about video games who, 20 years ago would have laughed at anyone playing videogames, and all they comment on is how it looks.
"God of war looks amazing". "
....Yeah, but have you seen the graphics on the new FIFA. Yeah it's the same shit and plays worse but it looks ace"

Using graphics in demos is the easiest way to fool the normies who, as a whole, are all visual-based in their lives; nice looking clothes, nice looking cars, fancy looking houses, the best, cutting edge tech because it looks the nicest.

No dev can create a good game that plays well while appealing to the normies unless it also has nice graphics. Look at the divide in starfield; one camp says the game is boring, the other says it's the best looking game to date. 9/10 times you can see that gamers call it boring and normies say it looks great.

Unpopular opinion:
PC gaming died with Crysis. What's left are oldfag gamers (like me) who remember the good times and know why PC gaming is superior for certain genres. Modern day PC gaming is more concerned with niggercattle buying graphics cards for £1000's, rather than

Does Soyny fans exist outside of Reddit? I haven't really encountered them aside of memes talking on their existence. While you can find Nintendo cultist pretty much everywhere, especially on this site.

Issue is that they are REALLY formulaic. Even when they finally innovate they just steal from other titles (Dark Souls in BotW, Ratchet and Clank in Mario Galaxy). It's only better than EA and Ubisoft by virtue of not fucking with the playerbase.

I'm mixed on this. Feels more like Gameplay and Story are the two pillars of a game that define it. A game can succeed without a strong presence of one of them but that means it relies heavily on the other pillar. I hated the gameplay in Baldur's Gate 1 because a good chunk of the game is low level Advanced 2E DnD, which is the most horrendous shit possible, especially if you don't roll mage. However I plowed through the whole thing and enjoyed it because the villain's plot, how it was carried out, and how it was presented to the player was top tier and pretty much blew out the writing out of any game I've played in the past decade. Meanwhile I've enjoyed stuff like Satisfactory because even though it has practically zero story, the gameplay is very addictive.

You can rely entirely on one of those pillars but hopefully the other pillar isn't sabotaging your entire game to the point that your core pillar doesn't keep up. TLOU1 had a pretty good story with alright gameplay. Then TLOU2 had a god awful story and the gameplay was nowhere near strong enough to make up for that story. Or the Telltale Games in general, as they all had shitty gameplay that was carried by the story. Once the writing dips, no one cares about your glorified VN.

There's a lot of them on twitter, which is fitting as its the grazing range for niggercattle.
Dark Souls in BotW
BOTW didn't steal from Dark Souls, it stole from Skyrim, The Witcher 3, and Far Cry.
Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma reflected on the development of the upcoming Breath of the Wild while also sharing some insights into the game's development towards release. Specifically, Aonuma talked about several games that he played during research for Breath of the Wild, which included the Far Cry series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Aonuma addressed that "in the past, I didn't play many video games," adding that "nowadays, I actually play a lot of overseas titles." After playing the titles previously mentioned (and many others), Aonuma explained that "while playing those games, I do find some ideas, but it's not that it connects directly to Zelda to where I would take something and use it in Zelda, but it's more of something I keep in the back of my head while developing the game."
[a]
In another article, Aonuma talks a bit more about Skyrim and it really feels like Skyrim was the main inspiration they drew from.
"In the past I've also actually said that I have played Skyrim, so it's not necessarily that I don't play games," Aonuma stated. "But we don't look at it from, 'Oh, what kind of things can we take from this game?' It's more of like, 'How can we prepare for this? What should we expect from games like this?'"
[a]

It isn't surprising the Nips looked to Skyrim as it was the first Western game to get a 40/40 review score from Famitsu. A lot of the design philosophies of BOTW just ooze Skyrim: you don't have to follow any routes as you can just go straight up the side of a mountain, more of a focus on wanderlust than notable big dungeons, and a consistent physics system that lets you do retarded shit with it. Hell, there really is no other way they could have such a god awful menu system and thought "yeah, it's fine that this intrudes on gameplay at every opportunity" without playing Skyrim.
