Outside of nostalgic media, the late-90s and all of the 00s were pretty terrible all around. It makes sense that people would strive for something more progressive following that, but all that happened is that they flipped the tables. There might've been a sweet spot where things weren't completely psychotic around 2010, but I can't even say that with certainty. People always look at me weird when I say any tattoos are disgusting. Even the "tattoos that mean something" like death dates or birth dates of children always felt like the equivalent of "trauma peacocking" to me. Like you have to be forever marked with whatever struggle/achievement/life event defines who you are and that idea just never sat well with me. The tattoos because "I like the art" or "that's who I am on the inside" or "I'm just expressing myself" just feels like a desperate attempt to seem unique. It reeks of teenage angst and I think it's frankly pathetic anyone would do that to their bodies. We should go back to shaming tattoos. They all turn out crappy in the end anyway.
