It's probably game related like this wrestler is a useful upgrade in winning 99% of the time. Dave also usually dumps money into solo events like this one.
But from reading the thread I've understood that the game doesn't really matter. The event doesn't make a difference. He will always have a 95+% win rate. He doesn't really need to worry about that. He doesn't care about wrestling. He doesn't care about his guild. The game might as well be My Little Pony Island Adventure Mobile, and he'd still be pulling six star Rainbow Dash.

He is clearly addicted. He's admitted as much in the past. And the severity of an addiction usually correlates with stress.

If you're a meth head and you're about to lose your house, you want to escape reality more than ever before so you'll hit the pipe as often as humanly possible.

If you're an alcoholic and your wife is taking the kids to Chad's place more and more often, you'll probably go through the entire Total Wine catalogue faster than ever before.

My logic is, if he is spending such amounts of money that some people take two months to make off a full time job, there is underlying stress that triggers it. It can't be the game itself

Holidays can be a stressful, depressing time for some people, especially if they lack a proper support structure and have isolated themselves.

Multiple times this month, Phil has brought up past Christmases on his copecast. Spending time with family, eating food, his uncle dressing up as Santa, presents he got, good memories of his childhood. What he has this year is a wife who can't cook and is getting fatter everyday and a cat-son who only spends time with him when his wife is at work.

2023 started out with Phil thinking this would be a reset for his business and his reputation. His React channel was going to allow him to spend less time playing games. The Sidescrollers interview was going to let him get his story out to a new audience. Phil was going to finally show the trolls they were the mentally ill ones. SF6 came out, and Phil thought he could prove that EVO 2006 wasn't a fluke; he could hang with the big boys. All of those dreams came crashing down.

There's also speculation Phil was trying to refinance his house and get access to more money to dump into gacha gaming and gin, but the bank denied him.

This was a banner year for detractors, but an awful, humbling one for Phil. It's no surprise he would be depressed, and depressed people turn to their addictions for comfort. You can't buy your way to a great win/loss ratio in SF, but you can spend your way to the top of the charts in a gacha game. For one, brief moment, Phil knew what it felt like to win.

Yes, but you need to keep building your team regularly in these predatory games or you fall behind and all the money you spent is wasted.

At the level Dave is at, he either has to quit playing cold turkey (like he did with WWE Supercard) or keep doing this. There's plenty of folks in the game's reddit over the years that outright talks like this, and then still end up spending thousands. He can't play responsibly like most people, example TJ Gamebox who spends a few bucks here and there (Note: Do not spend any money on WWE Champions. It's terrible.)

Of course, there's addiction and mental illness doing this.

But with Dave, he's also incredibly stupid with no financial responsibility. He's been "I have money, I must spend money!" his entire life. So, I don't read too much into it.

Based on the updated leaderboard, it looks like Phil stopped playing while the other players didn't:

Santa Hogan won't be bringing Phil a first place finish after all it seems.

No Christmas Miracle for ya DSP.
Just wasted money.

Most men your age are spending their Christmas watching their young children open gifts that they spent money on.
You? You spend thousands on a shitty mobile game and still can't win at it.

Please help me understand....
Other than addiction these type of games also let people who are terrible at games feel like they're good. The people who whale into these trash addiction manipulators are always 100% the type of people who are last place on the player board in any competitive/skill based game.

Something I think you might be missing is that this is a normal amount of money for Phil to spend on this game. Phil routinely spends this much on these limited time events to get the new character and level them up fully.

It's just the game. They put out """deals""" during these limited time events where you can more cheaply focus farm the items to fully level up the new character so that your account doesn't fall behind the power creep. Like $99.99 instead of $119.99, or $219.99 instead of $299.99. Deals you'd have to be "stupid" to pass up.

I doubt Phil even cares about the event leader boards, he just happens to be spending the most quickly during the events at the start to get all the items he "needs". Every event is like this where Phil will be in the top 10 to 20 and as the event goes on the real whales who drop like $4K+ on every event just to be on the top of that leader board push him down to like 44th place.
It's just that this time Phil's life is so fucking empty he has nothing to do on Christmas except sit there and tap payments to Scopely on his phone screen until he ended up the number 1 fucking gacha addicted loser on Christmas in the Big Meaty Man event or whatever the fuck.

That's the scary bit to me.
Gacha addiction is absolutely a thing. People will ruin their lives and savings for nothing more than flashing lights, popping noises, a pretty JPG, and "YOUR WINNER" to assure them they are absolutely achieving something and not just pissing their money into a digital black hole.
And at the same time, this truth hits some sort of filter in my brain that claims this isn't true, despite all the evidence to the contrary. It's like some Lovecraftian delusion that keeps me sane.
You know how Van Helsing said disbelief was the greatest power of the vamapire? It's actually true here.

Hell, over in China, the power of gacha addiction is so great that the Chinese government is actually doing something about it.

Mates, I'm not a big champions follower, and I don't play mobile games, but it seems to me this is the first time he's ranked first. Do yall think it's the Christmas + youtube paycheck boost or it's trauma-coping over something that is happening to him in real life?

Seems like from the clips I've seen he's been going through an "appreciating life" arc like someone whos just been diagnosed with cancer. I'm absolutely not saying anything like that has happened, but he seems to be acting like he's in his final years, and he seemed really eager to drink a lot during his marathon (from the few clips I've seen).

Is this just some common addict behavior or there's some stress influencing him to whale more? I see he made a couple of hundred bucks, and his youtube check just came in, so it makes perfect sense why the whaling would be monumental, but is he this unhinged? Is he this addicted?

From the estimates it seems like he spent enough money for 5x family Christmas feasts on an image of a fat dude in a spandex.

Please help me understand....
A year or two back, Phil slipped that mommy gives him like $2K for his birthday. She probably does the same for Christmas

Linda begs Dave (the real Dave) for 2k to give to Phil

And Phil gets money off Linda to give to Scopely

It's the circle of life
I've heard Phil say a couple different times that the routine is his parents give him $1,000 for Christmas that way he can buy himself whatever he wants for Christmas.
How recently did he say this? Based on the bank leaks I don't see any one-off $1,000-$2,000 donations in April/December and if memory serves Linda said the tax bailout at his wedding in 2019 was the last time they'd give him any money.

Just imagine spending $1400 to own that jpeg instead of taking your wife on a honeymoon.
Well… Have you seen Khat? This is one instance where I back Fill 100%.

That woman is fat enough to bend light itself. She wants a honeymoon? Eat nothing but lettuce for a few months, and she can have her honeymoon.

I think near Christmas 2019 he mentioned that he wouldn't be expecting his "usual" $1,000 from his parents for Christmas because of them giving him $4K for his taxes that year.

I'm pretty sure I've heard him mention it a couple times prior to that. Like 2017 when he threw out a bunch of ornaments and decorations after Leanna and was buying a few hundred dollars worth of new Christmas ornaments and decorations he mentioned his parents Christmas money paying for that.

Don't even get me started on how in the Burnell household growing up both Phil and his adopted sister Melissa would each get their own personal Christmas tree for their bedroom and had their own personal set of ornaments to decorate them however they wanted and then a large Christmas tree for the living room that was Linda's to decorate however she wanted.

Edit: They bought his Potato Wife a $600 exercise bike for her birthday that Phil broke putting together and I assume Phil pocketed the refund.
Even at the time he was in CT for his secret wedding when they said he was cutoff after this they were still offering to pay for a week long vacation to somewhere so he could have a honeymoon. So even when they're telling him they won't bail him out like this again they're immediately offering him an extravagant gift.

I think growing up Phil’s parents just bought him shit so they wouldn't have to pay attention to him or parent him.
Now that he's an adult-baby they just continue that pattern of monetary gifts instead of actually having to care about him.
They are likely still sending him some amount of the routine cash they have always sent him for special occasions.

I mean… What would you do? Phil is likely their biggest disappointment, especially Dave’s.

At some point you just gotta cut your emotional losses, try not to think of what a fuck up you've raised 11 months out of the year, and once or twice a year send them a little “Sorry you’re a failure. Not sure what went wrong, but I wish it would have turned out differently. Here’s something to remind you that I love you and wish you weren’t such a disappointment”-present.
