Shawn B (powername Shawn Verlyn Burgstrum) is a schizocow on Youtube. He believes that he is being stalked by the Union Pacific Railroad.

His videos follow a typical pattern: he films a Union Pacific train operating outside his house. Then he rambles and ascribes unusual explanations for normal railroad activities.
Sometimes he goes into a rage. He often communicates thinly veiled threats towards the Union Pacific.

Who is Shawn B?

Shawn Verlyn Burgstrum is a resident of Council Bluffs Iowa. He is 46 years old. He lives in a humble one-bedroom home at 1207 7th Avenue. His phone number is (712) 323-8185 according to ClustrMaps. I haven't tested this number. You're welcome to try calling Shawn if you want to pozload my neghole. He is presumably single (he never mentions a significant other). He is employed as a Doordasher. He was a submariner in the Navy "during the Clinton administration". He claims that he was a "nuclear weapons security guard" and had a "secret classified clearance" for his job as a sonar technician. Most likely, his job was to listen for the noise made by passing ships while under the supervision of someone who actually knew what they were doing.

Shawn’s home is literally on the wrong side of not just one, but two busy railroad tracks. Council Bluffs is a shithole, but thanks to its central location in the country, it is the nexus for several major railroads.

The 8PM Pervert and the Overnight Shitbag


There is a track that runs right down the center of 12th street, which is directly beside Shawn’s house. Railroad tracks sometimes run down the center of a street. This is known as street running. The track is owned by Union Pacific (which henceforth will be abbreviated as UP) and it connects a sprawling UP rail yard to the south on 16th Street with a smaller yard to the north on Avenue G. This track is a yard track, meaning that trains operating it are restricted to a speed of only 10-15MPH. All of the freight cars that arrive in the yard are merged into a single long train, and are then pulled out of the yard. The train then reverses back into the yard, with workers adjusting switches to get the right cars on the right track for departing. Once a car or set of cars is on the right track, they are uncoupled from the train, which then pulls forward so the process can be repeated.

This train is known as a switching job, but to Shawn, it is the 8pm Pervert. The switching job will scoot back and forth for hours. Switching jobs usually happen in the early evening, and end before midnight, assuming there aren’t any issues. Railroads operate 24/7, but the bulk of the mainline activity happens during the daytime on weekdays. Yard operations often take place at night. That is when Shawn B is trying to sleep. Around 9PM central time, every night, you can expect to see Shawn uploading a video where he complains about the 8PM Pervert, creeping on him and his neighbors. Sometimes he yells at the train. He never openly threatens the UP. He is good at hedging his words, similar to the way Sam Hyde says "in a defense situation".

The other purpose of the connecting track is to move trains between the yards. Train cars heading north are moved north to the Canadian National/UP yard on Avenue G. Cars heading East or West are brought to the yard on 16th street, where they are then sent off on the transcontinental railroad. This train usually goes by at 3AM. It takes the work of the 8pm Pervert and gets it ready to be moved down the mainline at around 5AM. Shawn refers to this train as the Overnight Shitbag. He will often post videos during the wee hours of the morning. He walks out into the empty street and complains to the camera about how the Union Pathetic is destroying public property, committing psychological warfare against him and his neighbors, and conducting illegal industrial operations in a residential area.

There is also the mainline on 12th street. This is the track that trains use if they’re not stopping in either of the yards in Council Bluffs. These trains are known as “through freights” or unit trains and they usually carry the same kind of freight to the same place. Like shipping containers, coal, oil, gravel, or grain. Shawn lumps these trains in under the “overnight shitbag” umbrella.

Cliffs- The 8PM Pervert and The Overnight Shitbag, and the Weekend Shitbag

The 8PM pervert is a train that switches cars in the yard. It has to pull into Shawn's neighborhood and then moves back and forth as cars are switched onto different tracks. It runs past Shawn's house starting at 8pm and usually cuts off around midnight.

The Overnight Shitbag moves cars from the Union Pacific yard south of Shawn's house to the UP/Canadian National yard north of Shawn's house.

There is also the "weekend shitbag" or "weekend shitheel", which is actually just the 8PM pervert and overnight shitbag, but they show up earlier because there are fewer trains on Saturday and Sunday,

Sometimes a through train will stop on 12th street because it has a red signal. If this takes place at the same time that the 8PM pervert is switching cars and peeping into Shawn’s window, then the neighborhood will be completely blocked on both sides. This isn’t completely true; it’s possible to drive a few blocks to get around the trains. But when it happens, Shawn will rage extra hard, because he believes he's trapped in his neighborhood.

What is Shawn going to do about it?
Besides uploading multiple Youtube videos a day, Shawn hasn't done much about the Union Pathetic. He talks a lot of shit, but so far he is careful to threaten the railroad without committing a crime.
I'm not sure how much longer this is going to go on. Shawn's speech can get fairly violent. I'm waiting for him to attempt to take matters into his own hands and try to board a locomotive.
We also can't rule out sabotage.
Time will tell. He is a consistent uploader, and some of his videos are entertaining.


I have train autism. I am not a foamer (foamers will be discussed later in this thread) but I do enjoy trains. I actually stumbled upon Shawn B’s YouTube channel because I was watching comfy footage of the Southern Pacific Railroad operating at night in the early 1990s around the Port of Los Angeles. Not a lot of railfan footage is taken at night. It’s hard to film at night, so footage of night operations reveals a less visible side of railroading. What night footage does come out is usually filmed by railroad employees themselves, who enjoy protection from the railroad police, various federal statutes, and a 410,000 pound steel horse. I have to admit, hearing freight cars slowly clanking down a yard track while a junkie talks to himself is a raw moment of railroad viewing. Many railroad operations take place in industrial areas, adjacent to impoverished working class residential zones. In colloquial terms, “the wrong side of the tracks”. Train watchers are reluctant to take expensive video equipment into a shitty neighborhood at 3AM. But Shawn, being a denizen of the impoverished trackside neighborhood, has no such qualms about filming Union Pacific night operations.


Is Shawn in the Right?
Union Pacific is an evil corporation. They treat their employees like shit, pollute the environment, pay nothing in taxes, and pretty much just exist to enrich investors. It could've easily been them destroying East Palestine a few months ago.
Does that mean Shawn is a hero?

No. Shawn says that his house was built in 1900.
The Union Pacific has existed in Council Bluffs since 1863.

The railroad was there first. Property records indicate that Shawn bought the house (presumably with a VA loan).

Sidecows:

The foamer community is a source of untapped lolcow milk. On each video Shawn posts, dozens of foamers chime in to tell him that the railroad workers are just doing their jobs, that the track doesn’t have to be in great shape because the speed limit is 10mph, and that he should just move if he hates the railroad so much. They fail to realize that trying to reason with Shawn over YouTube is no more effective than Shawn yelling at a GE ES44AC locomotive. Or perhaps they’re just blowing their own horns by showing off their railroad knowledge.

One foamer in particular stuck out to me: UnionPacificRailfan.

UnionPacificRailfain is a 20-something man who loves Paw Patrol and trains. I’m not going to try to doxx him because he’s also some kind of actual retard. I wouldn’t include a potato, but this website does have a lively forum thread titled “Tard Baby General (includes brain dead kids)”, so I’m including the potato. If you want to do some Special Olympics Gayops, be my guest, but remember that if you dox an actual retard, you're also retarded.



He made several “Shawn B exposed” videos where he talks about Shawn and defends his beloved Union Pacific railroad. It’s difcult to discern what he’s saying, because he has some kind of speech impediment. I know not what pathology he has been afflicted with, and I feel armchair diagnosing him with anything beyond “some kind of tard” is a fool’s errand.




Political Sperging:

Shawn has run for mayor of Council Bluffs twice. I got a trial subscription to the Council Bluffs Nonpareil newspaper to confirm this. He handedly lost both elections.
I found three interesting factoids from his mayoral campaigns.
First, in 2004, he was asked how he'd address the city's rampant problem with meth.
Shawn recommended going after people who supply the precursor.
Many Youtube commenters suggest that Shawn is on meth or crack. This tidbit from his campaign suggests against it. I believe Shawn simply has some psychiatric disorder.
Shawn also suggested that Council Bluffs get a commuter train. A few times he has said that the Rock Island Railroad (which owned the tracks before Union Pacific bought them in the late 70s) was a good railroad.
This shows that Shawn doesn't completely hate trains. His anger is directed at the Union Pacific.

In a few videos, Shawn has derided Matt Walsh, the True and Honest Mayor of Council Bluffs. He claims that Matt Walsh is in cahoots with a bunch of retired old fucks who worked at the Union Pathetic. Blaming local politicians without doing anything meaningful about them is typical schizocow behavior. I don't expect much to come of this.

Shawn had a Podcast
It wasn't that interesting. He has some unwarranted self importance.
He basically has a "lol both sides are wrong. I'm right" take. He doesn't talk about the UP in the podcast. He talks about COVID and slavery. The latest Ugly Truth Politics podcast episode was about COVID, and it aired on November 19th, 2021. There were only eight Podcasts. All were from 2021, and all but two were from early 2021. The only interesting episode is episode 1, where Shawn gives some self doxx info about his navy service and mayoral campaigns. You can hear the train in the background in some of the podcasts. Shawn's first video about the UP on Youtube aired on June 3rd, 2022. I believe that his paranoia towards the UP came on suddenly. The podcast is otherwise unremarkable.

Interactions Between Shawn and the Law:

In late May/early June of 2023, Shawn called Union Pacific's customer service line over 15 times. He kept harassing them and probably made some thinly veiled threats. Local police were dispatched to Shawn's house to give him a verbal warning. Shawn was not charged with a crime, but he was warned that he would be charged if he persisted. This is where Shawn says he's a doordash driver. It's also where his address is confirmed. The shitty hand railing in the video is visible in Google Maps.



It's clear that Shawn is already known to law enforcement because they greet him by his first name without prior introduction.


Shawn has claimed that he has been visited by the FBI. He said the FBI determined that he hasn't broken Federal law. I believe that Shawn is telling the truth. The Glowies will sometimes visit a potential criminal. They warn the person that they're being watched, and that they shouldn't do anything stupid. Shawn has taken this to mean that the Feds aren't going to stop him, so he can keep doing what he's doing. He also claims that he has passed information about the UP off to the FBI. This is true. The FBI has tip lines that mostly recieve schizo ramblings and various other nothingburgers. Most likely his tips are either not read or skimmed by an unlucky intern.

Here's the video where Shawn claims that the FBI found no wrongdoing. At 1:00 he says that he raped the Union Pacific.


Interactions Between Shawn and the Union Pacific
The Union Pacific employees in Council Bluffs have been instructed not to engage with Shawn.
This decreases the lolcow milk, but it's good for the UP's image, and their employees' safety.

Here is a rare instance of an engineer yelling at Shawn that she can't move the train.
It took place before UP put out the memo saying to not engage with Shawn.



Note: I have 80% of Shawn's videos saved on my computer in .MP4 format, and in a Mega for good measure. However, it is difficult to upload them during the daily dilation. The chances of Shawn deleting fucking everything are very low. He has self doxxed, the foamer community is already gangstalking him, he has been in contact with law enforcement, any yet Shawn has made no effort to cover his tracks. He feels he is in the right, so he will keep his videos up. I can only see them being taken down if he does something rash and Youtube takes the videos down. In that case, I would have most of his content in the Mega for posterity.
To make the thread run faster during the Dilation, I am compressing videos to 240p. This reduces a 20 to 100Mb file down to just 5-10Mb.

A few times he has said that the Rock Island Railroad (which owned the tracks before Union Pacific bought them in the late 70s) was a good railroad.
He may not hate all trains but he sure knows fuck all about them. The Rock Island may have looked like a railroad, what with having trains, tracks, signals and that sort of thing, but what it really was was a gigantic financial black hole that sucked in money and produced nothing, except maybe some diesel fumes. Foamers like it because it had a bright, colourful paint scheme and was one of very few railroads to run passenger trains after Amtrak was formed - but that was only because it was too bankrupt to pay the entrance fee to the Amtrak scheme, something that even Penn Central (which was 3 years away from the biggest bankruptcy in American history) managed to do.

UP is such a shit company that half the things he complains about are things it (and other big railroads) regularly do. Blocking off entire neighbourhoods for hours at a time? Check. (This is because fewer, longer trains are cheaper to run so they are now so long they don't even fit into the yards properly and just get parked in the middle of town, fuck you). Not transporting hazardous materials safely? Check. Overloading cars? Check. Deferring maintenance on tracks until they become rollercoasters with a 3mph speed limit? Check. Watching people while they take a shit? You know what, probably. But I have a teeny suspicion this guy might just be a schizo.

We've had a few attempts at foamer threads over they years but they tend not to gain much traction (badum, tisssh). There are of course the legendary Len Shaner threads if you can navigate them - Shaner himself and some of his A-Logs did so much thread duplicating and sockpuppeting that they're really hard to parse. Basic info on Shaner is that he is a Pennsylvania foamer who used to volunteer at a number of preserved railroads in the PA area and got banned from all of them for sexually harassing female volunteers and visitors and stealing locomotive parts, before going on a social media crusade against them that was notable for featuring a number of sock-puppet accounts posing as beautiful women who definitely had sex with Len Shaner all the time, guys! There's some great stories about him (especially from his time working at Home Depot) in the thread if you can navigate it.

Looks very promising. I found this website he runs. It's the Union Pacific Lovers Club that just has pictures of crashed trains :story: It's apparently ran out of his house (same address) with a link to his YouTube page
I believe that is not Shawn. I think it’s foamers trolling him. At one point on Google Maps his house was labeled as the Union Pacific Customer Service department, and his neighbor’s house was the Union Pacific Heritage Fleet.

He’s said he gets calls from people saying they’re Union Pacific. It’s only a matter of time before he gains some trolls. Anyone who takes time out of their day to pozload my neghole with him has a strong possibility of becoming a cow themself.

It's not that big a deal, a lot of people in the military have it. If you are operating or repairing any technology that is military specific and not given access to the general public you have to get a secret security clearance. It's just to be sure you don't have any large debt or something hanging over your head that people can use as leverage to get operational specs on the equipment you use.

Unfortunately for us (fortunately for Shawn) I don’t think he’s schizo enough to believe UP will follow him if he moves far from the railroad. The issue is that he can’t move. Technically he’s actually in an OK position. He owns the house, so he just has to make enough as a doordasher to pay for food, utilities, and property taxes (and maybe drugs). But he can only sell the house for $90k because he’s on the wrong side of the tracks. It’s not getting sold for $200k to build a townhome on. $90k will only buy a home in somewhere that is more car dependent and has less work for the gig economy. I don’t think he can make it as a wage slave at Dollar General or McDonalds while living in some exurb. If he gets fired for complaining or not showing up on time, he’s fucked. But he can decide not to do GrubHub that day if he’s too tired from yelling at trains.

So he’s stuck with the trains.

In episode 1 of his podcast, he says that the incumbent mayor Matt Walsh slashed his tires, messed with the steering and brakes on his truck, and sent him dead animals in the mail. That could be evidence of more schizophrenia. But I think he was just being dramatic. Let me put it this way. If he does hurt a UP employee, he’s not getting an insanity plea. He’s not Terry Davis (who actually was intentionally killed by the Union Pacific on behalf of the glowniggers), and he’s definitely not Matthew C Harris.

Basically yes. Railroad cops are a bunch of baldheads who don’t like me watching trains next to the yard but look the other way when Tyrone steals a PS5 or a bunch of guns a from an intermodal train.

But they are state-certified police. The only difference between railroad police and most other police is that their salaries are paid by the railroad instead of a city or county. They can operate outside railroad property, for example if they suspect someone stole equipment they can get a warrant to search their house. They coordinate closely with local police to make sure there’s not a problem with jurisdiction. That’s why Shawn was visited by Council Bluffs PD when they warned him to stop harassing UP’s call center, even though it was a crime against the railroad. A few times I’ve seen UP police in Shawn’s videos, but I think they were just scoping things out.

If he tries to sabotage the railroad or harm employees, the UP police will respond.
