I am of the opinion that early on, Nick and Kayla's access to finances beyond necessities was limited. Crowder's contract was certainly unique, as they use Locals for his Mug Club, but none (or very little) of the Locals branding is on it. Actual details? I could only assume, but most companies would give "talent" the same contract, with some blanks to fill in specifics, ala Twitch.

Nick's parents. They probably covered the basic necessities--or made up shortfalls. I know someone who fell on hard times, and their parents ended up helping them pay for groceries and utilities. I could tell it really bothered the man to have to go to his parents every month, and he stopped as soon as he could get back on his feet.

Perhaps something similar nursed resentment in Nick? Knowing his laziness, perhaps his rants about his 'poverty' was due to mis-management? He had his housing and school paid for, as I recall (or at least he had arranged for his schooling to be paid for based on his 'safety net' clip from LOCALS). That is a huge headscarf for most married couples who start with a mortgage and two student debts to pay, based on my understanding of American culture.
