Disaster Iceland volcano: Emergency declared over volcano Fagradalsfjall eruption concerns - lol fag

Iceland has declared a state of emergency after a series of earthquakes raised fears of a volcanic eruption.

Authorities have ordered thousands living in the southwestern town of Grindavík to evacuate as a precaution.

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) says it is concerned large amounts of magma - molten rock- is spreading underground and could surface there.

Thousands of tremors have been recorded around the nearby Fagradalsfjall volcano in recent weeks.

They have been concentrated in Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, which had remained dormant to volcanic activity for 800 years before a 2021 eruption.

On Thursday, the increased seismic activity in the area prompted the closure of the nearby Blue Lagoon landmark. More than 20,000 tremors have been recorded in southwest Iceland since late October.

Iceland's Civil Protection Agency said the decision to evacuate came after the IMO could not rule out a "magma tunnel that is currently forming could reach Grindavík".

In a statement on Friday, the agency said people must leave the town, but also emphasised it was not an "emergency evacuation" - calling on them to "remain calm, because we have a good amount of time to react".

"There is no immediate danger imminent, the evacuation is primarily preventive with the safety of all Grindavík residents as the principal aim," it added.

All roads into the town of around 4,000 people are closed other than for emergencies, to ensure traffic can get in and out.

In an statement on Friday, the IMO said "significant changes have occurred in the seismic activity", with tremors moving towards Grindavík over the course of the day.

It added that magma has likely extended beneath the town and it was "not possible to determine exactly" whether or where it could emerge.

"The amount of magma involved is significantly more than what was observed in the largest magma intrusions associated with the eruptions at Fagradalsfjall," the IMO said.

Iceland is one of the most geographically active regions in the world, with around 30 active volcanic sites.

Volcanic eruptions occur when magma, which is lighter than the solid rock around it, rises to the earth's surface from deep below it.

In July, Litli-Hrutur, or Little Ram, erupted in the Fagradalsfjall area, drawing tourists to the site of the "world's newest baby volcano".

The site was dormant for eight centuries until eruptions in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Wow.. Awesome pic.. I notice those city lights in the background. I would not want to be those poor people right now.. That doesn't look far. If it makes it there they are going to lose everything. They better hurry and get their stuff out.
The town is Grindavik and they were evacuated about a month ago at the first rapid magma intrusion. I posted some pictures of the town earlier in the thread. They had some giant cracks going through the town.

Thankfully it looks like the lava is flowing north away from the city and they have been building earthen defensive walls around it and the surrounding infrastructure.

Good to hear. Especially building the wall to keep the illegal lava out. lol

Volcanos are the ultimate force of nature. If you truly want to see everything destroyed a volcano will reduce everything to ashes and stone. But at the same time most volcanos aren't running rapidly like raging rivers and destroying the forest. Though scary movie thought and fun idea.

This volcano will be something of a show mother nature is putting on for us. Perhaps it's an omen perhaps it's something else who knows.

Article with some areal photographs. Picture attached as well.
From what I've read elsewhere it has shrunk quite a bit from Monday, but that doesn't mean it's stopping soon. Could keep going for weeks-months.

Sweet images. We're going to get some kickass heavy metal album covers out of this incident for sure.

The erruption is over, the danger is not.
I hadn't been able to keep up much with it and my info I posted before was out of date about it continuing on.

From what I understand, there is still magma moving and it could re-errupt again in the future or be somewhere else. They've had a couple in the past 3 years in the same region of Iceland.
Land subsided during the erruption and now has started rising again.

Here is a video from Just Icelandic with good info.

It's not over.
We could be looking at it erupting again anytime. Land uplift is at the same level as it was before the one earlier this month. New cracks are forming on the road around Grindavik and Blue lagoon.

At the GPS station in Svartsengi, land has now reached a similar height as was measured just before the eruption on December 18. The land mass growth has remained fairly stable. Before the last eruption, that growth slowed down in the weeks before the eruption, and in that regard the situation is therefore somewhat different now.

Here's a video from Just Icelandic going over the recent updates.

A worker who was filling in the cracks in Grindavik apparently fell into one today. They are still looking for him.

"This will be done until the case is resolved"

Jón Þór Stefánsson writes January 10, 2024 10:08 PM
From the scene in Grindavik tonight./ VICTORY
Rescue forces have resumed searching for a man who fell into a crack in Grindavik today. The search takes place two and two searching at a time, by descending into the crack in the basket. This is stated by Jón Þór Víglundsson, information officer of the Slysavarns Association Landsbjargar in a conversation with a news agency.
„ A platform has been secured in such a way that it is completely safe to send people back down, “ says Jon Thor, who explains that the security of the searchers is paramount.
„ Conditions in the area are very difficult, “ he adds. „It's mainly because of how the crack is. This is just a very challenging task. It is in constant estimation, the safety of people in the area. “

Humility has been proclaimed both for the night and in the morning, if needed.
„ This will be done until the case is resolved.“
According to Jon, the crack is of the nature that it opens in a larger space that is not visible from above. He claims to have information about what the volume of the crack, and thus the search area, is believed to be.
Humanity has been proclaimed both for the night and for tomorrow./ VICTORY
Police received an announcement in the eleventh hour this morning that a man who had been working on soil work in the area had fallen into a crack that formed when the earth was giving up, but there was no eyewitness to the accident.
The man had been working to fill a crack at a house sent to the West Group in Grindavík with the aim of ensuring the safety of the environment and the house that stood by the crack.
It was reported today that the man's tools had been found in the search. According to news sources, so-called soil compressors were found.

It has started back up right outside the town and it starting to get to the houses. Also unfortunately that guy was not found who fell into the crack.

edit: here's the English liveblog: Latest update looks like there are sheep that are back in the town

Sheep remain trapped in town

sheepintown.jpg
Thirty sheep are confined in a pen in Grindavík near the street Bakkalág. Sheep are also held in a pen at Sjávarbraut, and others in the Þórkátlustað district, and possibly elsewhere.

"The animals are in captivity and it is very important that they are rescued if possible," says Linda Karen Gunnarsdóttir, chairperson of the Animal Protection Association of Iceland.

The Association has been in contact with landowners in the area, and there are sheep in at least five properties in Grindavík. It is also suspected that some pets are trapped.

When Grindavík was evacuated in November, a lot of time was spent rescuing animals and ferrying them out of town. It seems that many people have brought their animals back into town.

"It is extremely serious that animals have entered the town again. Of course they weren't supposed to be there, but people started coming back into the town and started going about their normal lives.

"Animal owners have subsequently decided to bring their animals into the town and there are even reportedly pets there too, but we have yet to confirm that."

Linda appeals to Civil Defence and other responsible parties in the operation to rescue the animals, if at all possible.

Luckily the town was evacuated because of the previous eruption so I don't think any one has been hurt.
People had gone back in and it looks like some had brought their animals back that are now potentially trapped. I don't think the town was empty when this started and I was reading yesterday that they were going to force another evacuation Monday morning. The volcano didn't wait.

It looks like the lava did not intrude further into the town and that closer vent is done. It looks like 3 or 4 houses burned down.
Stuff I am reading is that it's obviously not safe and new vents can open at any time anywhere in the danger zone. It does look like the walls they built up did help.

Icelandic Meteorological Office:
Based on webcam footage, it is evident that the lava flow has decreased from the eruptive fissures that opened yesterday. Flow from the southern eruptive fissure, which emerged around noon yesterday near the town‘s border, seems to have ceased. The majority of the remaining lava flow is now directed southwest along the protective barriers, and its trajectory seems to have stabilized.

It is difficult to estimate how long this eruption will last. Seismic activity has decreased, and GPS measurements indicate that the rate of deformation in the area has reduced. However, deformation is still detected near the southernmost part of the magma conduit beneath Grindavík.

Measurements indicate that there has been a displacement of up to 1.4 meters in the past 24 hours, distributed across numerous fissures within the town‘s boundaries. Fresh fissures have developed, and existing ones have expanded. It is possible that additional fissures may emerge on the surface in the next few days.
