He also apparently couldn't figure out why readers really liked Rorschach, despite the fact that Rorschach is one of the only characters consistently trying to do the right thing. Granted he's absolutely off his nut and really bad at it, but by God is he trying.
It reminds me of a perhaps apocryphal story an old professor of mine used to tell about Samuel Beckett. He had the chance to work with the old Irishman for a few months, and they got to be casual drinking buddies. At some point they were discussing, of course, Waiting for Godot, and to my professor's surprise Beckett expressed great irritation with the play's legendary status, basically saying it was overrated, not his best work, etc. etc.
And what was his best work, my professor asked?
"Ah! Now Endgame! There's a play."
That's the one with the guys in the garbage cans, for those of you unfamiliar with theatre.
Authors are often the absolute worst judges of their own work.
