Tabletop Roleplaying Games (D&D, Pathfinder, CoC, ETC.)

Yeah it definitely feels like an arms race when attempting to consistently challenge a party in 5e which I'm not to much of a fan of. Admittedly I've only really ran 5e and Deadlands Classic so I can't really speak to how things were in older editions from a DM's perspective.
Pressure them via resource management and putting them in situations where they can't just deal with something after a short/long rest. Add class levels to some monsters. Don't be afraid to rely on quantity over quality if the situation calls for it. Death of a thousand cuts can be more effective than one big beefy monster. Make your own custom monsters and don't just rely on the half-assed monster manual. Finally, most importantly, do not interrupt the party when they are making a mistake.

I don't want to touch what DnD is now with a ten foot pole.
I prefer physical sources for my games so I have a bunch of books because they had an interesting mechanic or system I might want to use again.
PF rules are free tho, no need to give them money (as in legally, not high seas).

I would 100% recommend everyone here to give the goblin slayer TTRPG a try. Not only, it's probably the best bang for the buck on the market right now. An over a 615-page book for around $20 or under. It might be the only official release of Sword World in the west as far I know. Sword World is Japan's favorite TTRPG and that influences anime and eastern fantasy to this day. It's culturally Japan's own Dungeons and Dragons. Not only Goblin Slayer TTRPG didn't censor the lore and even kept the name dark elves. Sword World system is easy to use. It's a two D6 system and extremely adaptable for other settings.Hell Goblin slayers TTRPG do not downplay or censor goblins reproduced exclusively by rape from lore. The book confirms the Goblin slayer universe has slaver gangs and magic in the universe, date rape drugs. And other political incorrect elements like the lizard men culturally being in the universe stand ins for Native Americans with a warrior culture that practice scalping.

have a link for the goblin slayer ttrpg?

Edit: https://www.amazon.com/Goblin-Slayer-Tabletop-Roleplaying-Game/dp/1975318315

I thought it would be on some obscure anime focused site, not Amazon. I also can't find a scanned upload of the book on the usual sites.

apparently some anons looked into hasbro's finances and think it's pretty much dead. no idea how much merit it has, but in regards to dnd it would just mean wotc gets sold/split off at some point, and given the general poz in the west the new owners (or wotc themselves) wouldn't change anything anyway

I can do you one better: https://old.reddit.com/r/SwordWorld/comments/ybhoba/sword_world_25_core_rulebook_i_complete/

goblin slayer is big enough and an "official" title to get a spot on amazon (tbh every chinkshit vendor also gets a spot, amazon is hardly the mark of quality). 20 bucks is a good price and would show there's demand.
sword world 2.5 is apparently available on kindle (in jp only tho), might be a good idea to buy a few books as support if you like it since it doesn't cost any shipping.

There is a lot of Japanese ttrpgs, unfortunately very few are actually translated. Notepad anon has a video on them.

I might have to look into that. Not a big fan of anime or manga, but most of my players are. I wish it wasn't attached to goblin slayer though lol. I like my dark fantasy and all, but I tend avoid subjects like rape and the like.

You could keep that in the setting (assuming you know your players are fine with that level of darkness), as a very quick and horrifying way to establish how evil goblins are, but I wouldn't make it part of the narrative itself. If the party finds a bunch of female captives in a goblin den, let the party put 2 and 2 together as they rescue the women and don't make the matter obvious. It's way too fucking easy to fall into Magical Realm territory with that kinda shit.

Yeah, Sword World, Necronica, Double Cross, Tokyo Nova, Dracorouge. There's alot of cool jttrpgs if you're willing to drive into the communities that fan translate them. Play them, atleast to say you tried something different.

Most Japanese ttrpgs tend towards a very structured kind of game that might not be everyone's cup of tea, like Dracurouge's explicit division of adventures into social scene, combat scene and a climax. It's one of the main things that keeps me from running it (that and it lends itself to oneshots, but at the same time requires a degree of system mastery). It's still a pretty good read, though the best bits of lore from supplemental books weren't translated into English yet when I last checked. Nechronica seems to be similar, since they're both games by Kamiya Ryo, but I haven't looked into Nechronica all that deeply.

I assure you, the shortstack goblin breeding sows who capture virile men and milk them for days on end is ESSENTIAL to my setting's lore, okay!?

But seriously, that's why I eschew sexual content in the games I generally run. It's just awkward to include when you are playing with other people. The most magical realm I allow is brothels in seedy towns, just so I can do the Orcess and the watermelon joke.

Sword World has some odd jank. In particular you're going to have to get used to ranks in combat like you're playing a video game, since that's an element of how its combat works. Conversely it does make you worry less about your attributes since the worst you're going to get is a +0. It also is slightly kinder towards crit-fails, since getting 1-zoro is rarer than a getting a botch on a d20.

Conversely expect coomers. One of the races are literally a race of maids.

you mean the positions? simplified combat is literally analog "four niggas in a row". standard combat from book II is more what people would expect.

I like the Goblin Slayer RPG but having read the translated Sword World books. Goblin Slayer isn't quite Sword World and has a few differences. It's great for Dark Fantasy games though. If you want actual Sword World you can find high quality translations of the books online for free. You can't buy a physical translated book but you can use a service like Lulu to get them printed professionally for you.
