I actually had a strangely similar experience in that I tried to order a lengua torta from a Mexican (probably illegal) food truck a bit out of the way once after seeing it on their menu and the guy had no idea what I wanted until I said it like 5 times because every time he heard "torta" it sounded like I had three heads to him.
