I know everyone is upset. And I know this was as clear a miscarriage of justice as possible. I don't know if Rekieta and Beard planned to grift off this all along and didn't care what happened or if they had altruistic intentions that went awry as a result of their collective smugness and Beard not reading Chupp's courtroom.
Unfortunately, that doesn't really matter any longer since it looks like Vic has agreed to pay. And because of that, Rial, Marchi, Toye, and everyone else on the KickVic side can claim victory. It's gross, wrong, baffling, and further lowers almost everyone's opinion of our blighted court system, but it is what it is.
I don't know how much money Vic has in the bank. I've heard he's pretty well-off, so this judgment might not be that big of a deal. Or maybe this'll throw him into the poorhouse. Either way, I think the best the ISWV side can do to show public solidarity is to find some way to pass the hat around so Vic isn't alone in writing this settlement check. I don't think you can fund judgments on GFM, but you might on GiveSendGo, which has some reach. Crypto might also be an avenue, something with which Null might be able to assist.
This would, of course, need to be okay'd by Vic himself, so someone with his ear would need to make contact. And he'll likely heavily argue against the community paying a single penny for what turned out to be a whiplash of a legal adventure. However, the ISWV side needs to show both Vic and their detractors that they don't simply cut bait and run and regards helping to pay this judgment a mandate.
This is something real and tangible that can be done, not endless hand-wringing on X or Meta that would just provide an endless buffet for KickVic trolls. Perhaps even ComicsGate, as fractured as they are, could advise on the best course of action since there's a lot of fan cross-pollination between indie comics and anime (believe it or not, there are some good actors in CG).
As they say, talk is cheap. We'll just have to hope that, somewhere down the road, karma will catch-up to these miscreants in a deliciously satisfying way. And that the community will be there to catch it all in crystal clarity.
