She can’t even get a landlord reference because she’s not allowed pets in her apartment, so she’s either lied to them (had that “friend” pretend to be her landlord) or they don’t actually check because they’re charging $150 for an “adoption”.

In regards to her whining about people talking about poor Pete’s demise, his health problems were made far worse by his poor care. He was extremely overweight, should’ve been on a diet and receiving special food for his kidney problem.

He died because of neglect. Not perhaps neglect in the traditional sense, but neglect to care for him in a nature that would’ve allowed him to live a healthier life.

I'm a firm believer in the "cat distribution" force of the universe. If you need a cat one will be provided for you by the whims of fate. This approach has never failed me and I've had cats all my life. You still need to have the money to care for the cat, obviously, but a $150 adoption fee is insane when you can just... go outside.

If this was basically anyone else I'd be a little bit more sympathetic - losing a pet is hard and the urge to fill the hole left by that grief is sometimes hard to ignore. But it's never a good idea to go from one pet to another so quickly before you even have time to process. But we know Staph isn't grieving.

Has she even met this cat in person? Pets, like houses, are things one should never purchase without seeing irl. Though the thought of her being scammed AGAIN has me on the edge of my seat. Please be a scam. Please be a scam.

Interesting. I was confused why it was a Yahoo News article until I saw that it was a repost of a local news one.

Looking more into the “rescue,” it is a very small, nitty gritty TNR program in the area. The page mostly signal boosts for other local groups or to trap and neuter cats yourself. They have an available adoptions folder where the Comet photos were posted back in July

I want to assume that the “organization” is just sketchy af looking by accident (the vet clinic Polissa Snow took Gomez to only has a Facebook page), everything just feels weird. I can’t tell if it’s just me reacting to Staph or what. A money scam would be far better to her getting a cat she can’t take care of through questionable means (including using a proxy or a TNR saying “yeah fine, just send money but don’t bring the cat back to US if you decide you don’t want anymore” after a ten second glance).

I didn’t mention Mama Frigs by name in one of my earlier posts, but I can’t imagine Papa Frigs wanting to care for a new cat and his sick wife, assuming her immune system can even take it. They arranged rescue adoptions for their personal friends while refusing to help poor people with stray control, even with our local humane society at max capacity. Just 2-3 ladies doing the trapping and clinic transportation in their free time. That $150 fee might go to the org's gas, food, and medical supply fund, since there's no physical location.... or it might be lining some pockets. Good job, Staph. At least this is ostensibly a better cause than pajeet criminal activity.

Going by her dad getting angry, she didn't tell her parents that she was adopting a cat. What is she planning on doing with the cat for half a week when she's not at her apartment? Shelters and rescues always need help with everything from socializing kittens to scooping up dog poop. You can get in as much cat time as you want without the added burden of being unable to care for it with no money.

The lack of non-profit registry has me raising my eyebrows but it is not unusual for organizations or even amateur operations like this to have expensive pet adoption fees for these reasons:

1. Gatekeeping sickos looking to use animals for violent purposes and retards from adopting animals they cannot properly care for
2. Funds to pay staff, buy supplies, and other administrative things
3. Covering spay/neuter costs, general medical costs for sick or injured animals, and paying the veterinary staff that handles these things

Depending on the area, things like this can often have a word-of-mouth reputation even if they are not officially registered organizations. An area I lived in had a massive lost and found pets and short term fosters network exclusively managed through social media, it was just a group of people looking to help and do the right thing in their community. There's not much of a way to vet these things unless you are native to the area and have familiarity with the people involved, but things like this are not unheard of.

TL;DR Shelters/rescues/community TNR's/fosters want animals they foster and care for to actually go to good, permanent homes where they will be properly cared for and so they can bring in new animals that need help for whatever reason.

Thanks to everyone for all the TNR/foster fee sperging. I've volunteered at rescues before but they were bigger ones in the community that had their own shelters and stuff. Pet scams are so common on the internet (especially ones involving Venmo or PayPal Friends and Family) that I can't help but think hmm. I've even heard of people being scammed with stray cats vs the more standard designer puppy ones. Looks like Heather needs to formally register her organization and set up an actual website if she wants the rescue to grow or get donations in a less sus looking way. From what I knew about scams and cat hoarders trying to larp as rescues, the lack of info and contradicting existing would've made me nope out of looking further at them if it wasn't for Staph.

As for her not getting Comet, I'm so relieved. Wonder what did it. Rescues talk to each other, so if she isn't getting Comet for particular reasons it may follow her elsewhere.
