I remember those nerd debates as well.About that "Gandalf is never quite magic” quote. I believe it's probably Patrick regurgitating without understanding something he's heard actual nerds discuss about the LotR universe.
For the audience, the general sense of those were criticisms of games, and not criticism of Tolkein; how the single most iconic wizard in literature apparently had far less power than a low to mid level D&D magic user, and if the limitations of gaming as a genre simply could not deal with the wise incarnation of divine will, but could handle the squad machine gunner.
High fantasy in games generally turn into tactical exercises which miss the point, like a Sherlock Holmes game that turns into a battle with Gatling guns and Winchesters.
Had a minor Pat encounter elsewhere on a space history forum; his failtake on the Starship 2 launch was brought up and someone pointed out Pat had no relevant experience and a GPA of 1.2. Got some points of Pat lore wrong, though.
