Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Spain dropped another animated banger on us last year.
View attachment 5710242
A dog in 1980s NYC is lonely and builds a robot companion. Not going to spoil anything further than that, other than the fact that this is one of the few pieces of media to actually get me to almost tear up a little. And it's all done with little to no dialogue. SEE. THIS. MOVIE. it's apparently also nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. If there were any sense of justice in the world, it would win, hands down, but it's probably going to be Spider-Verse.
So I had heard of this movie, but I hadn't watched it, after I read your comment I did go and watch it, it was pretty cute, world needs more movies like it.

However, the twin towers are visible in the background of every single shot and I couldn't get the mr enter 9/11 meme out of my mind while watching it.

I feel you, dude.

People today have no idea how to make a diverse cartoon or diverse characters without woke bullshit.

I can name four cartoons that do it better:

1. Captain Planet

2. Static Shock

3. Codename Kids Next Door

4. Kim Possible

God, I miss those shows.

I'll add on to that list.
  • Teen Titans (the original animated series)

  • Justice League and its sequel Unlimited
    • I fucking love these show btw. You can imagine my immense displeasure with what Young Justice evolved into.
  • Hot Wheels Battleforce 5
    • Though I have always found it funny that the Asian kid from Thailand is called Zoom Takezumi. It's a bit like Joe Higashi from Fatal Fury for me, who is actually from Japan. They are both silly lovable goobers though.
  • Total Drama (Not the reboot because it's shit)
Edit: formatting.
I can't believe you forgot Phineas & Ferb

You just know someone will bitch over that.

I will add Xiaolin Showdown to this list. It seems western animated shows really became pozzed by the mid 2010s.

Changed it, because Kim Possible had a slightly more diverse cast.
Checks out. Plus, Kim Possible was based. This expert from the one episode, "Stop Team Go," shows
Shego: "Good morning, class!"
Class: "Good morning, Miss Go!"
Kim: "Ron, that's Shego!"
Ron: "Nah, it's not Shego, it's See, it says so on the board!"
Kim: "Putting something on the board doesn't make it true!"
Ron: "Oh, sure, y'know, when I said that in 20th Century History, I got sent to the office!"
Kim: "The moon landing wasn't faked in the Arizona desert, Ron!"

Looks like Disney is going back to the nostagic well and continuing the old X-men cartoon from the 90s

Of course they wouldn't have the balls to make it completely like the 96/97 cartoon

I had sort of a biased appreciation for X-Men Evolution, especially when it aired on Kids WB back in the early-2000s. No, of course the new X-Men animated series isn't going to commit to anything based like this. (:_(
Gargoyles too
As well as Billy & Mandy, Fairly Oddparents, Jimmy Neutron, Futurama, etc.

Of the original cast, only Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm) Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler), and Cal Dodd (Wolverine) are reprising their roles. Ray Chase (the new VA for Cyclops) does sound like a double for the late Norm Spencer. Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Chris Potter (Gambit), Alyson Court (Jubilee), Lawrence Bayne (Cable), and Ron Rubin (Morph) were recast in new roles. I wasn't expecting it to be completely like the original.

What surprised me most was that the animation style reminded me of the 90s Spider-Man animated series.

Annnnnddddd into the trash it goes!

Morph's characterization in ‘X-MEN '97’:

“This is a lighter take on the character, who is nonbinary and has an interesting buddy relationship with Wolverine. The character’s past with Mister Sinister, the show’s villain, could also come into play.”

At least they're using non-binary in a way that makes sense, him being a shapeshifter and all.

Don't care, the writers are gonna go with a weepy "I was born a dude and now I just don't knooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" crap. The 90s cartoon had Morph just be a dude along with Mystique that was clearly a women (she even had a kid!) with no gender confusion at all.

In all honesty I never thought Battle Force 5 was bad, I just could never get into the whole “Power Rangers in cars” thing the show had going for it. It had some pretty nice computer animation, though. The whole BF5 vs WR/Acceleracers thing is just too funny.

Also I heard we were supposed to get 4 more movies, and one of the plot points involved transforming cars (which were repurposed into Battle Force 5 and its toyline), Banjee Castillo and other World Race drivers like Alec Wood and Dan Dresdon being Silencerz, and meeting Porkchop’s Mother.
Aw that would have been really interesting. I remember watching the Speed of Silence, which was the last one and being weirdly upset at the cliffhanger it ended on. As in Vert's dad being the leader (?) of the Silencerz.

I'd be down for meeting Porkchop's mom.

Oh to mourn what could have been,
Also I get the changing of times and all that, but Hotwheels cartoons for kids now are just painfully generic looking. I genuinely pity them for any kids into Hotwheels will think of that as definitive Hotwheels media. Hell, I pity kids for all the cartoons they’re growing up watching now. You never know how good you had it until it’s gone.
Same really. Miss the days when cartoons were just telling stories or, if you wanna get cynical, toy commercials. At the very least, there wasn't some agenda shoved in your face.

On a lighter note, I'm thinking of the Michel Vaillant series. It's a French comic from the 50s about a Formula 1 driver and the drama that comes with that.

It got a cartoon adaptation in the 80s, I think that got slapped with the Hot Wheels brand in the English dub. Always found that pretty fun trivia.

X-Men Evolution
Ooooo that's one I love too! The nostalgia for this one is strong.

Man I miss old Toonami.

Excuse me, it's THEY!

I kid, I kid. But I am also thinking of the weird pride month comics, Marvel did which was all kinds of wtf.

Why was it important to establish that Wolverine was in a poly relationship with Phoenix and Cyclops?

That aside, what do people think of Liberty's Kids?

I personally love it. It had a lot of balls for a kids cartoon and didn't bullshit around for anything, whether it was tense relations with Native Americans or slavery or death or executions, or the ambiguity of war.

But considering what it was about, it would be insulting to sugarcoat it.

They just can't fucking help themselves, can they?
Bro Bro Bro....Realize what they took from you
