I said "nigga" to joke with a friend once and was treated as if I was caught in Klan robes. The guy wouldn't talk to me for the entire night after I made the joke and refused to tell me why he was so upset until I pressed the issue. Apparently, making the joke showed off how "hateful" I was and it left him so shocked that he pretty much went catatonic. It was genuinely pathetic behavior.

On the other hand, me and the boys in high school making the most racist jokes about each other but nobody takes it personally. Then again, I lived in a small town.
Examples: Me asking my native friend what he has for lunch. He says he did not bring one and forgot to bring money. I ask him if our white friend is his lunch. My white friends responds by asking if I have dogmeat or cat meat in my fried rice today. I tell my native friend to get a paper plate and I spoon out some of my fried rice for him. It will taste just like coyote, I tell him. All 3 of us laugh.
