Share and discuss tales on how everyone's favorite video sharing website has silenced, censored or even punished you for the sake of "protecting the community (what fucking community? Which one? Suddenly its good to speak for a group without approval?) and "guidelines (the ever so vague guidelines that can mean anything and that is by design)". Maybe talk about workarounds too (we are pro solution after all)

Warning messages, shadow banning, finger wagging, anything related to it goes here.

Worst case scenario, this thread is at least a spot to put it out of your chest the frustration of dealing with nigger cattle websites like Youtube.

I'm noticing far more often lately just how gimped and useless the YouTube search function is. Has anyone else experienced this lately? I search something very specific that I know exists and instead I get bombarded with click bait, shit that is in no way relevant and sometimes even gore. How fucked is the algorithm?

One of my pet peeves is the amount of innocuous things that have to blurred in a video. Donut Operator has become unwatchable because the cops are holding blurs, shooting people who are blurred, and the sounds of gunshots are dubbed with quacking sounds. It gets so bad at times it's like the entire video is out of focus.

This is also a problem with fail/meme compilations. Beer? Blurred. Someone falls down? "No one was harmed." Someone does a backflip? "Do not attempt! These people are professionals!". Even if we go with the premise that some gen alpha kid would copy anything they see on YouTube, it still doesn't make any sense. Because it makes it seem that falling off a ladder and landing skull first on a flight of stairs results in no harm, but skiing should only be done by professionals as falling over in the snow could be lethal without proper training.

Hasn't YouTube always been a pit that Google shoves untold amounts of money into? They only way it seems like it would ever make financial sense was for them to turn it into Cable 2.0, ratchet up insane censorship, shove an astronomical amount of advertisements in your face, then tell you that it's for your own good.

It's a shadow of its former self and at this point should just quietly slip into obscurity and ultimately die by its own poor business decisions. It would also serve to loosen the grip of the tech monopolies that have sprung up by encouraging investment in alternate platforms. The problem with this though, is that I do not believe that Google runs YouTube to make money, but to push a social narrative to bring about changes that only the most elite zealots of the coastal California church of SocJus IdPol LGBTDILIGAF+++extrasuper+ priests want for the rest of the country. For that reason alone, even if it serves as a loss leader, they will continue to light piles of money on fire to support it.

Even if it must be government supported, the power that they wield over what is allowed to become the topic of cultural discourse is unethical. If the U.S. government supports it, it would be unlawful. Not that anybody is going to jail for this though.

To get rid of this as well as the "previously watched" nonsense and other bullshit, add the search operand before:current year+1, so if you want to see some funny shit, search for funny shit before:2025.

I know an ancap guy who goes on about this. According to him, Google's success in due in no small part to exclusive, extremely cheap land the US gov seized with eminent domain.

Youtube embeds absolutely boil my piss. They're always laggy as shit and when you pause them that fucking More Videos banner always pops up and covers almost the entire embed. Fuck off, I paused it to look at something in this frame, not to look at other videos. Not to mention all the videos that show up just fine at first but then swap to the nigger-black "This video is blocked in your country," "This video is age restricted," or even better "This video is can only be viewed on youtube.com." If a video can't be viewed as an embed why the fuck is it embeddable you faggots?

It's gotten to the point where half the time my first instinct it to give mpv the url. It's a better viewing experience anyways, so why not take the two extra clicks to copy the link?

edit: I understand the technical reasons for not showing those black blocking screens before you click on the embed. Doesn't mean I'm not pissed off though.

I've noticed the cooldown to skip ads have increased.... like 30+ seconds. They've essentially turned YouTube into actual TV. 5-6 short ads will play and even after the cooldown expires they will still play.

It's a non-issue on a computer due to ad blockers, but if you're using something like a Roku, it's obnoxious as fuck, and considering it's voting year, the political ads have ramped up. It's bad enough people have to deal with that shit on other aps like Pluto or Tubi, but now it's gotten to where you should just avoid Youtube as an app outside of the computer.

ReVanced for Android devices (phones, streaming boxes), compiling using the manager and selecting the desired patches is fine, small barrier of entry which I guess weeds out total retards. Need to provide an acceptable/support APK to be patched, can be installed w/o root access. Can (and should) be built locally on your PC with their CLI tool. Can utilise SponsorBlock as a bonus.

SmartTubeNext for TV devices that allow for sideloading of non-store apps. I do not have much experience beyond 'it worked the one time I tried it' for this, usually I just use a mini-pc with display port out. Also has SponsorBlock capacity apparently. Looks like it actually rebranded/renamed recently to just SmartTube.

I don't agree that it's equivalent to TV. If it was, they'd make the ads appear based on time and not on whether you clicked a new video or not. Someone watching 4 short videos is facing many similar ad "breaks" with tons and tons of ads each, but someone watching a longer one is having a relatively saner experience.

If YouTube really wants to push the "you watched TV" narrative they should think for 2 seconds about how their video format works compared to 20/40-minute TV show episodes.
