I used to think it was the cancer that caused it, but recently informed its the treatment itself.
It never goes away and is a lifelong thing, they can treat symptoms and "diminish" it somewhat, but never eliminate it.

Of course, living with this condition is far better than dying of metastatic breast cancer. We are very glad my grandma is still here, whatever it took.

But for a young healthy girl, inducing this permanent condition unnecessarily!?

Thanks for correction. I am now told my grandma had (god help her) BOTH conditions, one right after the other, so this is prob why I conflated the two. Both in arm on her 'mastectomy side' and looked very similar also.

The lymphoedema (excuse British spelling) is caused by the removal of the armpit lymph nodes (axillary lymph nodes), rather than the breast itself. Surgeons remove the lymph nodes because cancer cells tend to end up there, and can move from there to elsewhere in the body. Without the lymph nodes, the extracellular fluid doesn't get returned to the lymph system and recirculated and just builds up, hence the swelling.
Since Scythe is removing the breasts of girls with no cancer, she ought not to be removing the lymph nodes, so lymphoedema shouldn't result. So I think she is offering a cosmetic surgery in a related area that was easier for her to train for, as it's related to what she already does. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if removing just the breasts could harm the lymphatic system in that area.
