I think Nick made the mistake of trying to marry what he believed was the idealized young woman twenty years ago. It didn’t have much to do with compatibility but what he believed society most prized in a woman when he was in his twenties.

I’ve known several men who did this, all ended up divorced after a few kids and 10-15 years of marriage. The guys all were a different levels of hedonists that liked to raise a little hell, chase bad girls and drink but were also raised middle class Christian boys. a “bad boy” that wants a very “good girl” as a wife syndrome.

When it came to what these 18-25 year old men wanted in a wife it was 1. Virgin 2. Pretty 3. Sweet/ Docile 4. Christian (but honestly Christian was just a given, so church twice a week and in the choir is more apt) 5. Woman who proclaimed bring good wife/mom was her calling. 6. Someone they felt smarter than.

A cheerleader, or homecoming Queen, is icing on the cake. The wholesome Christian girl is supposed to suffer with, and then tame, the young man. Then they raise a happy, wholesome, god fearing family together.

It comes down to these young men putting a lot of value on what they perceive their society/community prized in women, because they were still a bit young to know what they needed or wanted in a wife. These traits were seem at the most important. It sounds like Kayla was a sweet, perky, pretty cheerleader with strong Christian values and good family, but could let her hair down a little. She ticked every box Nick, and his upbringing, told him a woman should. She ideal wife material traits for an upstanding, sober, hardworking. Christian man, but that’s not Nick, at least now now if it ever was.

Nick liked the idea of a good Christian wife and mom, but living the reality was more difficult for him over the years. So they’ve grown apart. Kayla would have been better off if she had stuck to being a good Christian, rather than try to rationalize and cooperate with Nick’s moral slide. I think she resisted his back sliding ways at first, but his fame and money rolling in made it easier for her to think maybe he was onto something after all and she was just being a judgmental prude. She also probably thought, correctly, that she could lose her husband if she didn’t go along with his new lifestyle and interests.

As it stands now Nick no longer has the prized, wholesome Christian wife because she tried to adjust to the baldo e-celeb husband and party with him - per his request. But he also doesn’t get a libertine, party girl, which he might be compatible with, because that’s not Kayla either. So he ends up unsatisfied with Kayla no matter what. Straddling both worlds was never going to work for her or him.

What Nick idolized as wife material as a 22 year old man is vastly different from what he now wants as a 40-something, alcoholic, e-celeb streamer. But he’s married to the woman he chose as a young man and has five children with her, so this is why he pouts and drinks.

I generally don't subscribe to the "alcohol shows the real person" idea, because alcohol by its nature is a mind-altering substance. It fucks with your executive reasoning and drops your IQ.

However, I'll make an exception in Nick's case.

There are elements to his early-career behaviour that appeared innocuous, if a little quirky, but which in light of recent revelations, reveal the man to have always been some sort of narcissistic degenerate with poor impulse control. Stuff that can be spun as positive; big, showy purchases at charity donations, pro se representation (where he does no work) and the like. His stories about his previous jobs can be portrayed as "fighting against the man" or whatever, but they stink of nepo hires that he blew off because he had daddy's money to live on. He throws cash around like he has no idea of its worth and has never truly worked a real day in his life.
