Jilldo and Shrek stayed an extra day in the DR, so they were off the Plexus itinerary, and Jill booked the cheapest flight home she could find.
The layover is apparently in Philly, so that's the reason for the "states away" remark.

Normally I'd guess it's because the wife doesn't want to disturb their husband while they sleep, but I don't know if she's that courteous.
