Maybe Jack isn't at the age where that happens (despite his obvious brain damage) or has just refused that advice, but often doctors will ask that someone, especially someone old, bring along a relative or someone for medical diagnostic procedures not just so they make it home, but if the patient can't understand it or whatever, they have someone who can explain it later. This isn't just for mental cases, but because some of those involve shit like Dilaudid or other anesthesia where you literally can't remember what happened afterwards.
