I agree with folks up above, that very casual conversation can just shit up threads; or, conversely, others can shit up your threads.

But I also agree with Null, because I, like others, kept getting added to shit I didn’t want to be in. I even kept leaving some retarded 100 member group and got continually invited back in. Perhaps we need an “enthusiastic consent to DM form”. I do believe the troon threat has taken a lot of convos to DM, though. I blame troons.

Edit: I think that if people feel they can't talk conversationally on the main off-topic boards, I'm doing something really wrong and I'd like to see how it can be loosened up.

I think its just alot of the time its hard to really promote the media boards for new fags, I always say I enjoy vidya discussion on the games section but promoting it without possibly ruining post quality is another circle that might need crossing.
not many know of the off topic boards over all and, while it is not to the level of the DSP board, makes it feel isolated from the rest of the site at times.

This would happen to me to and whoever would do it would add me again the moment I left the retardation. I don’t mind it when other users want to share a story or ask me a question or two that doesn’t warrant a thread, but I’m not using my DMs to watch grown men call each other names over and over

My theory has been that if I disable this, people will simply move to Discord, which has historically caused extreme problems as people start sending nudes, sexually harassing each other, and getting involved in ultra-gay drama that I do not have the time or patience to untangle or deal with.

don't think you're doing anything wrong, I think DMs are always going to naturally feel safer to talk more casually than public forums.

I agree, it’s not that your wrong it’s more so has to do with it being a middle ground between live chat and the actual thread. If you re-ask a question that’s already been asked in a main thread you will look like a retard and get hit with lates. If you ask it in live chat it will disappear and only a select few will see it at a time. DMs are a good middle ground because we can say things that are more “hot take-ish” too and it won’t take up space in the main thread.

Edit: I think another feature that may be good too is it asking “do you accept invite from this chat” before you actually click on it.
