Where are you getting "can't be assed" from? Nobody is saying that this system has made using the site impossible, we're saying it's adding unnecessary friction.
Imo this is a great improvement and will make the site better as a whole because obsessing over stickers is dumb and gay, especially if the people melting down over it actually leave.

Null should put everything on the front page so I never have to click anything

The future is a boot stamping the Watch button every time you look at a thread--automatically.
Have you clicked the "watched threads" button even once

It seems other users share Null's horrified shock that there is more than 1 way to use the site. Let's call this a teachable moment. Here are the last posts for the 5 threads I do Watch:

Slow moving, no reason to visit them daily or have them on the front page. But I do want to know when something happens. When I get a notification that there's a new post, it's rare enough to mean something. This is not a useful section for my daily browsing or F5 spamming.

If I Watched all the cow & lolsuit threads I'm interested in, plus every A&N thread I post in, plus the off-topic fun threads, I would get notification spam 10x worse than the stickers. Either I would go to the thread immediately, triggering a new notification a minute later, or I would ignore a notification and it would get forgotten under all the others. Either I radically changing my browsing behavior for no benefit, or I start missing out on threads I would otherwise engage in.

I'm sure others use Watch and notifications different from me, and that's fine. But it's completely retarded to say we're better off with 1 tool instead of 2, or that you're supposed to browse the forums at a specific pace and in a specific way.

What you were doing before wasn't efficient tho, it was completely retarded. Scrolling through a long lists of reacts to find a thread you want takes a lot more time than just clicking on the thread from the forum list or your profile.

I feel like Null laid out his reasoning for doing this pretty well, but I understand someone who can't be assed to click twice instead of one also can't read more than one sentence at a time.

The entirely of this disconnect boils down to kiwis like Lidl who stick to one part of the Farms, and kiwis like Harvey who have multiple, varied interests spread evenly throughout the Farms.

Watched threads obviously work for Lidl who only has 2 ,or 3 , main threads to bait people in. Notifications work way better when you want to keep brief tabs on a dozen different threads.

Maybe a little empathy before devolving into a back and forth, yeah?

How do I get notified about new activity in threads I have recently posted in? Because that's the feature I want which I was using the notifications as a way to approximate.
Replace sticker notifications with this and I would have no complaints @Null

I don't want to manually watch and unwatch every thread I post in.

Threads that have recently been posted in appear at the top of the forum list, it's called being bumped. When you look at the forum list you will therefore see all the threads with recent activity at the top. They will also be in bold if a new post has been made since you last clicked on it. Hope that helps you and others who have no idea how an internet forum works.

Just make it a notification. Have an option that, if checked, would notify you of new posts in a thread you recently posted to within a period of a day or two that doesn't require you to manually watch or unwatch the thread. It would lessen the amount of friction and it doesn't involve stickers.

Today I learned that there are people who use the sticker notifications to navigate the threads they want to read. I now understand what Hadrian felt when he saw the scots and decided to build a fucking wall to keep them away. You barbarians are bereft of God's light.
It was incredibly convenient if you were trying to keep tabs on a thread. Bullshit a little, make people chuckle and you would have a clear reference point for if the thread was active or not based on the frequency of responses from the stickers. Plus, it felt good getting all those deviant reacts on the random pics and gifs thread.

I really don't get the sperging over a feature that apparently can be easily be made to be toggled on or off.

Reaction scores and treating the system as reddit karma is one thing that I think everyone agrees is gay and retarded, but why shouldn't users be able to decide for themselves how they navigate the farms? If people prefer and are used to using sticker alerts why is that le bad?

I want sticker notifications for entirely selfish reasons: I'm used to interact with the farms a certain way, and while I'm aware of the alternatives, those just don't work for me, and I've tried. No, watching threads isn't the same as checking where sticker points are coming from, it isn a substitute, and I was already using yhe watch threads fir other purposes.
This is a very big forum and there's a lot of ways of tackling the size issue, I'm seeing a lot of people from both sides completely incapable or unwilling of accepting that there's more ways to browse the farms than theirs, specially between folks who post once in a while and people who are almost terminally online, both of those are clearly on display OTT.
I know that you can't really change Null's mind once he gets sand in his vagina (and I think he's more or less justified in feeling pissed at recent events, despite what I think of this particular idea) so I will wait and try to adapt and to no make much noise until new developments, but I'm afraid of the long term consequences of silly internet point rationing since I know from personal experience that nothing erodes a community quicker that people feeling punished or mildly inconvenienced for totally unrelated people's sins.

The complaint has now shifted to "without sticker notifications, how will I know about updates to threads I don't care about"

The schism is between people who obsess over single threads or boards, and people who interact with the entire site.

Which is funny, because for the last 2 years Null has been complaining about the silo people who go to 4chan or Discord when the site has other areas they could explore. Now those people are defending Null for killing a feature that was useful when moving across the entire site.
